| | | Hi benzo (valium) thread Hi folks,
I saw a thread that almost answered my question before it drifted, I hate to
cover old ground, so I'll just be direct. I got a therapeutic range on valium from the previous thread for GAD, running up to 40mg a day. Do they
ever exceed this range in acute events, or is this a line not to be crossed?
If there are exceptions, how exceptional are they (not easy to answer, I
know).
It may be time to fire this shrink anyway (2 visits and my pain medication
history already has me seeing where this is going) but I want to know how
justified I am in telling this woman to take a walk.
Thanks--og

most docs seem to prescribe xanax or ativan instead these days.
i think if you are not happy with this woman doc, tell her to take a
walk! with the stress you are under, you NEED some help right now.
you know i'm here for you, sweetie.

Check out: http://psyweb.com/Drughtm/jsp/valium.jsp
I'll quote one section from the above that will show that the range Philip gave
in the other thread that you're referring to is right on target.
=======================
Dosage Depends on Disorder:
Anxiety disorders and the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety, 18 to 60
years of age,2mg to 10mg 2 to 4 times daily or time-r el 15-30mg.
========================
That "up to 10 mg, if taken 4 times per day," is 40 mg.
I was on a regular dose of Librium of 10 mg, 4 times a day many years ago, and
my doc raised it to 25 mg 4 times a day for a certain situation that came up.
40 mg per day to 100 mg per day. Quite a difference in dosing range, but there's
a wider range for some medications than for others.
Regarding your doc - whatever your gut tells you is often right.

Hi Goat!!
The only thing I can about valium is they gave it to me to help with my
withdrawls from the pain pills and booze in rehab. It served it's purpose,
but once I started feeling better, the valium left me zonked out. Given the
choice, I'd take Xanax hands down.
P.S. Did you get my email last week?

| | | Re: Hi benzo (valium) thread Dear Bear,
Thanks much. You were actually the one I was looking to for the answer (or
at least had in mind from what you were saying in the thread) but thanks to
the others involved in the thread as well. Take this the right way, I hope
you never need it... but if I can return the favor in any chronic pain
fashion, I am at your disposal. But I hope it's something you (or anyone in
here) will never need. I already know (and love) too many people in this
group, as well.
Yea, I think it's firing time. Someone sees a stigmatized drug like OxyContin on your med list and you're asking about an increase in something
like Valium to help you through an acute crisis anxiety event, and I can
read "substance abuse" through lines, without having it hit me in the
forehead. After 11 years on drugs like OxyContin, I can smell it in the air,
without feeling paranoid about it. It shouldn't have to be this way, but
such goes the medical world.
As I said, I hope I can never help, but if I can...
In your debt--og

It's good to see you back among the typing. I did get your email, but there
has been so much going on in the last year or so trying to condense it in to
something reasonable and readable, is turning in to quite a task. I'm
working on it through, and will hopefully have something a little shorter
than "Lord of the Rings" for you soon. I know it's been a weird year for you
too, but your "freedom" seems to be agreeing with you. I like to say "I told
you so" when things work out well, if it's what I am thinking of.
If it was what you and Giggz were discussing, that falls under pain, you
should have gotten in touch. Sensitive area though it may be, that also is
one of my specialties. Back, front, top or bottom, if it hurts, I know too
much about it. Think of me when your butt hurts ; )
