Default My experience quitting xanax cold turkey

I took my last dose of alphazolam on 2/14/07 evening and haven't had a
dose since and it's the morning of 2/18/07. I couldn't sleep for two
days, but last night I slept well and this morning I feel great! I
feel like I did before ever taking that crap, which I won't be taking
ever again, the **** is poison. I had a few twitches and minor leg
spasms the first and second night, but all those symptoms seem to be
gone. I had been taking ~2mg a day for about 8 months. Maybe I just
got off easy because my dosage was relatively low and I haven't been
taking it too long, but i feel as if all of the drug is out of my
system and that I needn't worry any longer of withdrawal symptoms. Am
    I celebrating a too early?

My suggestion would be to titrate slowly off your present dosage and
come down every week by .25 mg untill you are off it. Some people who
try to stop benzos cold turkey end up in the hospital.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm still feeling great. I'm never
taking that **** again. I felt like a zombie all day long. If I didn't
take my dose I would start shaking. I'm through with it.

I think you are out of the woods...I wouldn't take any more. I took
    it for about
a year, higher dosage than what you mentioned, but I was put in
    intensive care
for about 3 days until it was out of my system. The doc. said it
    takes about 72 hrs.
to metabolize out of the body. If you ever have to take a benzo
    again, I'd go with
    klonipin, ativan, or tranxene (sp).

I was only taking xanax because of some issues in my life at the time,
the last time I tried to quit all the anxiety returned so I kept
taking it. This time it seems I'm over it (a woman of course) since
the anxiety hasn't returned. If it does come back, which I think is
highly unlikely, I'll deal with it w/o drugs. Thanks for the
suggestion nonetheless. And I would like to warn anyone thinking about
starting xanax, to think twice about it. That stuff messes with your
mind more than anything I've ever done and it's highly addictive. Like
I said: I'll never take it again, and I'm grateful to be off it.

yer lucky. i'm jealous. i've been tryin' for months ta titrate and
just sat on tha edge of panic 24/7. i transitioned to klonopin and
whaddah joke. i'm told by way too many shrinks and regular ole docs
that my panic "disorder" will never allow me to sans a benzo, and
xanax works. on the OTHER HAND, i've run into brick walls right'n
left by uppity 'ivory tower dwellers' that merely said "yer a drug
seeker, rehabs all we can offer you." my response of "killing your
children is the best i can offer you" didn't work too well, so i hung
tuff and stopped bein' a know-it-all and finally this doctor in the ER
last week put me back on xanax.

i wanted ta kiss tha ground he walked on.

i even offered him oral sex, he said "let's talk about it."

ok... i'm jokin' about that last part.

maybe you didn't need it or sumthin'. i wasn't on as much as you and
i quit 3 times cold turkey in the last 9 years and ended up
hospitalized 3 times. my bp was in the 200's / 160-180 and i was
thinkin' of hirin' a hit man ta shoot me.

    i wonder if that's illegal.

yer whole story has'ah ring of "sumthin' missing". why were you ON
xanax? were you on other substances that dictated the use of xanax?
cuz if so, that could explain a lot.

i'm no genius, (i DO need ta throw that in, people confuse me with one
quite often, yanno) but i DO know panic "attacks" aren't treated by a
'regimen', which you said you were on. panic "disorder" is generally
treated by a 'regimen' and 2 mgs is nothin' ta sneeze at.

i smell'ah rat here and tha wind's blowin' from your direction.

FESS UP !!!!! are you a rec xanax user or a user to deplete the
    effects of other rec drugs?

whoever was prescribing your xanax, (unless it was Mr. Big) was surely
a ****ed up medical professional to allow you to cold turkey off'ah
benzo unless you purvey yer own medical agenda, in which case...
    well...

    (nebbermind.)

    i'm no dummy.

I'm just sharing my experience, believe what you want. After all the
horror stories I read on this board I was hesitant to quit cold turkey
because you guys scared the living **** out of me. Had me thinking I
was going to be beating my head against the wall wishing for the end.
It was two days of a somewhat living hell. On day three, and now into
day five, I feel fine. I was on ~2mg a day xanax for 8 months to treat
aniexty attacks I developed 8 months ago, because of a breakup. I quit
cold turkey and I feel great. As a matter of fact I had the best sleep
last night than I had in a long time. From your writing skills I'm
    imagining the rat you smell...nebbermind...

    That's tanya for you.

How the hell did you stop cold turkey?

I've been on 4 to5 mg of xanax a day for...Christ....in the 80's but never
    needed a increase.

    Good Luck!

I ran out of them, couldn't get a refill until the 27th. So I said "I
guess I'm going to find out what happens when you quit xanax cold
turkey!" I am very grateful that I got through it O.K.

I got ADD..How long have you been off the xanax? Christ, I've seen people
    come off xanax very hard.
Seizures. Rebound anx/pan...And bad ass leg cramps for over a year.

If you can deal with your anxiety without meds..God bless you.

My anxiety was only temporary, but then I got hooked on the xanax. I
also have a non-benzophobic doc that kept prescribing them. I took my
last dose 5 days ago. I feel excellent. It's so great to not feel like
    a zombie.

Any normal Doctor wouldn't prescribe Xanax for situational
anxiety...Atleast not for a long period of time.

    How are you feeling?

i'm thinkin' cuz tha underlyin' problem was situational, not'ah
    disorder, but whadd'ah i know.

nuthin', but that ain't tha point.

i went from 10-12 mgs ta 3 mgs, then down ta one mg a day after a 4
month stint on klonapin tryin' ta transition off'ah all that crap,
which was'ah little slice'ah non-heaven, but at least when i was put
back on xanax, i got it down ta two .5 mgs a day but with ALL MY
PROBLEMS I SEE Y'ALL SAY I HAVE, who knows how long it'll be til i'm
    up'n mistah BIG'S GRILL !

    time'll tell.

You never should quit long-tem benzo use cold turkey. A slow gradual taper
will minimize altho not eliminate any withdrawal symptoms.
