Default OT Question about pets+

I love dogs. A friend gave me a baby pitbull. I love this puppy but are
these dogs vicious by nature? Can they be raised to be loving and gentle or
should I get rid of this puppy b/f he becomes full grown? God forbid a child
or someone else getting hurt by this animal....I have him on a leash but he
is still a small dog right now. Would you keep him or get rid of him? Any
responses will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Carl

They can be VERY vicious, but if they're raised to be a loving dog, that's
exactly what they will be. Unless he nips at a child after he's out of the
puppy stage (at least a year old), he'll be just fine.

(I LOVE dogs)!!

There's an expression that there are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners. To a
great extent, this is true.

There's a caveat. Different breeds have different personalities. We have 3 dogs
- and trust me, our golden retrievers are no match for our 15# Australian
Terrier

Pits don't get along with other dogs - period. They love people tho.

Below seems a good site with sound information. It should help in seeing just
how good you are for the dog, as it points out just what they need (lots of
people care and attention, as an example). Not every person is fit for each
type of pet, nor the other way around as well. Knowing the type of pet or breed
is often paramount in deciding just what's right for you (or right for the pet).

I'd be happy to address this, Carl. I was in the same position you are
right now, and the mere thought of having a pit bull as a pet wasn't even
considered because of their reputation. Then, what should occur but that 2
pit bull puppies appeared in our family via our 2 adult children, both with
young children. At first, I was very uneasy, and all I could picture was
the pit bulls growing up, getting hold of one of the grandkids by the neck
with their powerful jaws, etc.

Now, one is full-grown, and the other is about 6 months old. I love them
both. They are so gentle with the grandkids, lovable and playful. They
both are 100% pit bulls, but one is a mottled brown/white, while the puppy
is black & white.

My oldest grandaughter educated me on pit bulls. There are different kinds,
i.e., pit bull terriers, red and blue-nosed pit bulls, etc. Basically, what
she tried to tell me is they become what they are raised to be: if they're
abused or taught to fight, they will become dangerous; if they are loved and
petted, they will be gentle dogs. When my one daughter went to choose a
puppy from the litter, she said the owners have kept both parents, and her
observation was that they both were very gentle. The "dad" pit-bull came
right up to her and licked her face. The "mom" pit-bull wasn't at all
disturbed that her puppies were handled or taken.

I won't go so far as to say when I get a dog, it will be a pit bull, but
I've seen first-hand how lovable and sweet they can be. One of our family
pit bulls is a girl, and the other is a boy. They get along beautifully and
will play and play until one or the other, or both, get tired and lies down
to take a nap.

My advice is that if you already love the pit bull puppy, you will show it
in various ways, and he/she will no doubt grow up gentle, yet will still
bark and growl, like any other breed of dog when some stranger comes to your
door. They are very protective of those they love. If there are small
children in your neighborhood, I'd just say keep an eye on the puppy and see
how he reacts to people. And, if you keep the puppy, just give it lots of
love and attention and it will love in return. Nanny

why NO, Carl... Pitbulls are NOT vicious by nature, history dictates
THAT conclusion.

not ONE pitbull has had it's life compromised due to vicious and/or
fatal incidences.

Being rather new on this forum, I haven't known Carl, although I think he
may have appreared on either AMF or ASA before. Irregardless, I think he
asked a legitimate question about pit bulls. A lot of people only know the
pit bull breed as being vicious with jaws that can crack someones bones or
even kill. Even I thought that until my daughter and her EX both got a 100%
pit bull puppies. They hit it off right away, and the adult female and the
male puppy play with each other whenever together. I love them! They get
lots of love, so they return the love. They are loyal, playful, gentle, and
protective of their "people". Good watch dog and can intimidate anyone
planning to break in a home or when with children.

With the understanding I have now, yes, some pit bulls are raised to fight;
but it's all in HOW you raise them. They give and receive love and make
happy pets. I have 6 grandkids who are around them and absolutely no
problems at all. Nanny
