| | | Question about Meds.. Hi there everyone.
I know I don't post here but I figured it would be a good place to get
some worries taken care of.
I went to new doctor today and after an hour session I was prescribed Klonopin and Lexapro to treat my anxiety and depression.
My dosage for Lexapro is 10 MG a day and for Klonopin it is .5 MG a
day.
My question is, has anyone who is taking these meds with similar dosage
experiencing any side effects that I should worry about. I was already
warned about possible nausea and sexual disfunction as well as "dreams"
with Lexapro. I wasn't told about any significant side effects that
come with Klonopin though.
Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Klonopin as a rule has hardly any side effects except some fatigue in
the beginning. Unlike antidepressants benzodiazepine anxiolytics
(affectionately known as *benzos*) like Klonopin don't need to buildu up
in your system, they start to work right after you take the first pill
(although Klonopin works even better after a week or so).
Starting an antidepressant often causes some exacerbation of anxiety
symptoms and add some weird initial symptoms of their own (like the
nausea you mention). Therefore the golden rule is: give your body time
to get familiar with it, so: *start low, go slow*. Ideally Lexapro
should be started at 5 mg (or even lower if necessary) to then raise the
dose with 5 mg after a week or so. But many people do wel on a 10 mg
starting dose. A benzo like Klonopin typically helps avoiding or
minimizing these initial AD side effects. 5 mg of Klonopin is, however,
a very low dose. It may be enough for you (stranger things have
happened) but if you start to have *interdose anxiety* after, say, 12
hours it would be recommended to take that .5 mg twice a day. If
necessary it can be raised.

| | | Re: Question about Meds.. I made a boo boo, my Klonopin is actually 15 MG a day (.5-3times a
day).
After taking a 10 MG dose of Lexapro and .5 MG of Klonopin last night
and twice today I'm actually feeling pretty good. Last night I had
weird twitches in my legs, only slightly today but it was okay. I slept
really well and have had a productive day. I don't know if it's just my
imagination but things are going quite well..
Thanks for your help!!

LOL. That's *1.5 mg*, right? ;-)

This is a typical SSRI side effect which should be temporary.

If you feel things are going well they are. You are the only one able to
judge this and I don't think imagination doesn't enter the equation (and
if it would that's fine too, whatever works...)
Moreover feeling better after one or two days on an antidepressant *is*
actually documented although it is not common. You'll manage, I'm sure.

Haha, you're right. Math was never my strong subject.

I don't know what to think about it. It could just be because I had a
good night's sleep and didn't have my normal wake up in the middle of
the night and I slept past 6 for once. I'll probably be my normal,
hypervigilant self tomorrow because I don't feel like I'm going to
sleep anytime soon. I can't wait to KNOW that it's working and not just
guessing. blah.

| | | Re: Question about Meds.. The only prob with Klonopin is that you will develop an immunity and
will have to keep increasing the dosage. I started off 8 years ago with
30 1 mg. pills a month, I am now on 120 1 mg. pills a month and could
even use more than that. For an antidepressant, I was on Lexapro for a
bit. It is really a good antidepressant. But, the one that worked for
me with the Klonopin was Wellbutrin XL. It just seemed to be a nice
cocktail of meds. Good luck. Other than the immunity build up, Klonopin
is awesome. I wouldn't want to go w/out it. But, the county pdocs are
trying to get me off of it and replacing it w/ Seroquel only with my
Wellbutrin XL. ( I am bipolar though) and have Panic Disorder.

| | | Re: Question about Meds.. Thank you so much. Yeah, my doctor informed me that after 4 weeks or
so, she would increase my Klonopin (I don't know how much yet). She
said that she would take it slow and steady which is a relief. I'm glad
to hear a success story with it because I've heard some bad stuff about
it. I'm not sure about the Lexapro yet because I'm still in the
depressed state I've been in for the past 3 years. I'm willing to keep
it up though, anything to feel better.

It's normal to raise the dose once or twice in the beginning. It is,
however, *not* true that youy will have to keep on raising it all the
time like Deb suggests. Developing tolerance to Klonopin (or any other
benzo) is *exceedingly* rare among anxiety sufferers. It may have
happened to Deb (although I'm not even sure about that from her post)
but personal experiences, if they are an exception to the rule, should
*not* be universalized. That's bad info and will only scare people off
potentially effective meds.
