I finally gave in after suffering with anxiety and occasional panic
attacks and visited a P-doc. He suggested I take ativan indefinately
because I had an anxiety disorder. I asked him about SSRI's and told
him i was afraid of benzos-all the withdrawel nightmare stories. He
said i could try lexapro-which i did. Took 10mg for six weeks-did not
help. Now I have to decide to up the dose or just get off it and go
with ativan or clonazepam (he said we could go either way-he leans
toward the latter). The ativan is a miracle drug no question about it
(never tried clonaz), and reading this list has really straightened me
out over the fear of dependency stuff, but now I am concerened about
dementia risks if i take this stuff long term as the p-doc advises. I
saw this doing a pubmed search and was wondering if anyone has any
thoughts on this issue one way or the other?

My mom and (maternal) grandma both used benzos for many, many years. Mom
died of cancer at age 70 (or 71), and Grandma died of leukemia at 95. No
dementia in either. I've never heard of the link between the two before you
mentioning it.
I would definitely try upping you Lexapro. 10 mgs. is a pretty low dose.
If nothing else, get the 'script filled for the Ativan and take it only when
really necessary. With your concerns up front, you probably wouldn't take
enough to become dependent on it. And, if you up the Lexapro, that might
end your troubles to begin with.
I wish you well.
