Default Smell of Anxiety

Hi all,

I'm new to the group so here's a bit of background. Long term
boyfriend broke up with me a week before Christmas, wants to "find
himself" at 47. We had lived together 5 1/2 years inseparable since
we met. We still have dinner 4 times or more a week at my house and
i'm at his on Saturdays. Weird, huh? My company closed 3 weeks later
and now I am on Lexapro and take Ativan for anxiety.

I feel like I can "smell" the anxiety on me. Do any of you have that
sensation and if so, what do you do about it? I'm not a "sweater" and
it's no body odor as such.

It just bothers me because I don't know if those around me "smell" it
too.

I've read extreme anxiety, or panic attacks can cause you to see/hear/
feel things that aren't real.....maybe that extends to smell as well.

What exactly do you smell? Can you place any familiar smells?

I know how it is about breaking up at christmas, I had my ex dump me
on christmas eve. It sucked. However it was years ago and her life is
now garbage...I feel a little better in knowing that.

This question is one I've heard. I've been on xanax for 14 years and
haver never had anyone comment about it. Ok, I just spent 20 minutes
finding my PDR and looking for side-effects, and I saw nothing similar
to your question on that. But not one person has the same reaction to
drugs, but after being on xanxa for so long, I would think one of my
friends would have said something, since they're totally evil. And
since I'm not a doctor, I can't give you any treatment advice. I can
only tell you to bring up your question to him and see what he
thinks.

Maybe you can help. My dad swears he can smell leather since I wear it
all the time, and says it has a horrid smell once someone has worn
it. I've never noticed it. All my leather gets sent to the dry
cleaners once I've worn it. Of course I smoke two packs of cigs a day,
but I highly doubt they've killed my sense of smell.

Hi SandraC,

My sister went through a very stressful court case last year and she
said the same thing as you are. She could smell
an unusual odor coming from herself even though she was meticulous
about showering, deodorant, etc. I think when someone is under
stress, his or her body produces certain hormones and we can smell
that. Remember that old saying about you can smell fear. Well, you can
smell stress and anxiety too. I don't know though if anyone else can
smell it.

Sophie

So you're saying it might be the pills causing an odor?
