What else besides Xanax?

What else works as effectively and smoothly as Xanax? I've been on
Xanax for 5 years now, and needless to say it's becoming less
effective due to tolerance build up.

Do you take a tricyclic or SSRI anti-depressant? These are excellent
anti-anxiety drugs and usually form the backbone of anxiety treatment. Daily
use of a benzo is also OK, provided one doesnt increase, and not come
back-down. That's the trick with benzos I've found,..always have a margin
you can increase to when things are bad, but come back again when things are
not so bad.
I note you are referring to Xanax,..which is taylored for anxiety treatment,
especially panic. Valium is different in that it has an 8 hour effect
compared to 4 hrs for Xanax. This suits some people, especially when looking
for a decent nights sleep. Perhaps, if your Dr is not a Benzo-phobe, he may
consider Valium?

The few times my panic had pushed me to the ER, they gave me shots of
Ativan.

A friend of mine, who has general anxiety when going to the dentist,
uses Ativan prior to going.

Ask your doc though!

How much are you taking? I've had Valerian root and Melatonin at night
recommended, but that would only be for those that take very low dosages of
xanax to start with. If you are building up a tolerance after five years,
you probably take too much for these natural remedies to be effective.

I was on Celexa before during a protracted period of extreme chronic
anxiety. But I went off it eventually, because I really didn't seem to
need it anymore and I felt that it was inhibiting me cognitively
somewhat. These days my anxiety only flairs up on occasion. It's
always there mind you, it just flairs up worse the usual from time to
time. The Xanax still does the trick at those times - but it also
seems close to having played itself out.

I don't think it's a matter of how much (I've had refils expire before
the bottle was empty) as for how long.

period.

expecting someone to recommend something similar to it based on
personal experience. That's why I come here for pill advice, because
of the personal experience factor. Then, yes, I discuss it with my
doctor! Please don't try diagnosing me, just tell me what else (if
anything) besides Xanax has worked for you. Has anyone here switched
from Xanax to Lorazepam for example? Thanx.

i've taken xanax for years. i've never had an addiction to it,
either. i take it "as needed". i went thru a very bad time where i
was in constant panic, and for some reason the xanax wasn't doing the
trick. the doctor DID give me lorazepam (ativan) for when i was in
panic mode, and the difference in the med was just enough to help me
thru. absolutely do try lorazepam if you haven't. i keep my
lorazepam for panic attacks, and xanax for general anxiety.

I switched from Valium to Xanax then back again. Later I switched to
clonozapam which is my current maintenance med, with Valium as needed for
breakthroughs.

All of the benzos have their adherents and detractors. A p-doc
specializing in anxiety once told me that, in his experience, individual
reactions vary considerably so there is no "best for this type of symptom"
benzo. He encouraged guided experimentation to find out which one is best
for the patient.

Personally, at equivalent dosages, I find Valium to be more effective over
Xanax for stress-related tension and GAD. Xanax did seem to have a
stronger impact on panic and physical reactions to memory flashbacks.
Valium also starts to work a tad faster and lasts longer.

Sorry, I have no experience with Ativan, and will probably never try it
because of it's short duration. Rrom the info in some of your earlier
posts, it sounds that either Ativan or Valium would be a reasonable choice
for you

BTW, the odds are against you having developed a tolerance for Xanax.

IMHO most benzos are similar, however YMMV. Some come on slow, some come on
fast, and each seems to last a certain amount of time given a comparable
dose. I've been doing well on Lorazapam (Ativan) for about 6 years now with
an SSRI chaser. That said my drug of choice would probably be Valium. I
don't take it regularly, but I've had it for minor surgical procedures and
it's a very smooth drug for me.

Whatever you take, I think you have to fight the urge to up the dosage.

For what its worth my P-doc claims he will not presribe xanax or
valium. He called them dirty drugs-whatever that means. He only will
prescribe lorazepam and klonopin. He thinks they are great drugs and
he prefers them for anxiety /panic even on a daily basis. I am taking .
5 loraz x 2 daily for GAD.
