| | | Xanax, Prozac, Cytomel, Percocet, Sugar and Anxiety Attacks! PLEASE HELP! PLEASE HELP! I have been on Prozac for 13 years, Cytomel(50 mcg) for a
couple of years, Xanax (.5 mg 3 times a day) and Percocet( 4-7.5) for
6 months. I am experiencing weird symptoms like chills, feeling cold,
anxious, especially after I eat the first big meal of the day, that
come and go. I am getting off the Xanax .5 mg only 2 times a day and
will be going to 3 Percocet a day in a week or so. I think these drugs
may be messing up my serotonin levels.Sometimes I feel the depression
symptoms coming back. I was thinking it was the Percocet or Xanax and
may need to go to a detox center. Has anyone gone to the detox center
and had panic attacks after coming out and off these drugs?
Thanks.

I think you may be experiencing Xanax withdrawal symptoms which would
not be so strange because you're weaning off to quickly. It might be
easier if you go on taking .5 mg three times a day but take only .25 mg
in the evening instead of .5. Try that for a week or so (or longer if
necessary) and if all goes well you could lower the second dose to.25 mg
as well Etc.etc. This may take time.
It is not to be recommended to taper off of Percocet at the same time.
It would be best to choose which one you can taper off first (and
Percocet should also be tapered very slowly).
Another possibility is that you are undermedicated on Cytomel which then
may mimic anxiety symptoms, this is easily established by bloodwork.
These drugs don't interfere with serotonin levels or with its reuptake
or whatever.
That said why were all these meds prescribed to you in the first place
(and why do you want to stop taking Xanax)?

Thanks for the reply. I saw some information on how addictive Xanax
can be so I wanted to go off it before I get hooked. But I did not
know to go that slow on tapering off Xanax.
Thanks.

The first question is: does it *work*? If it does, why fix something
that isn't broken?
There is a lot of scary so-called "information" out there on the
internet. Xanax is not *addictive* (which includes constant drug-seeking
behaviour, tolerance = needing an ever higher dose to attain the same
effect etc.). Like most psychotropic and many non-psychpotropic drugs
(such as *aspirin* for example!) it causes *dependence* which means that
your body gets used to the stuff and you have to stop it slowly in order
to avoid or minimize withdrawal symptoms. After using Xanax at a regular
daily dose for 6 months you are dependent on it. Not to worry, it *can*
be tapered. But I wouldn't do it for this reason if it works. A med that
works is a thing to cherish.

Hi Philip...
Unfortunately, Xanax is HIGHLY addictive. How do I know? I just with
through detox (`was there for one month). I have been educated through and
through now. I also spoke in depth w/three different psychiatrists about
this drug. Coming off Xanax is a nightmare in itself. Why? Because our
bodies become dependent on the drug. That's an addiction plain and simple.
Of course, I took the med for 24 years straight. That might be why I was SO
SICK when going through detox.
As far as the op's question about being off the Xanax... I have had little
anxiety attacks, but nothing catastrophic. There are plenty of
anti-depressants that work to help with anxiety. I take Serequol for the
attacks.
And, as God is my witness, I will *NEVER* take Xanax again.
