| | | am I a wimp--knee surgery still HURTS OK-- I had scope surgery yesterday.
Today it hurts worse than ever. I can get around on crutches and walk a
little bit without but it hurts.
Getting up from lying down and trying to walk without crutches is
excruciating. Using crutches for a bit and then continuing to walk is a
little better.
Anyway, logic tells me that this is the day after surgery so it's completely
normal. But I had this vision of being tougher than this. Boy am I impatient
(actually a bit worried)
So, for those who had scope surgery (mine did cartilege removal) is my
situation to be expected?

| | | Re: am I a wimp--knee surgery still HURTS I haven't had a knee scope done, but my general knowledge of muscles from
years of dancing and being otherwise active says the the a couple of days
after some insult to the muscle is the most painful. While a scope is
gentler than traditional surgery, it still batters the internal tissues and
the muscles. They DO have to insert those tools into you and they pump in
saline to expand the joint and it takes time for the body to recover. The
tools CAN inflame the muscles too, if you are prne to that, such as in
fibromyalgia. I had a horrendous situation with that last year after a
laproscopic biopsy. Think of it in those terms.
That said, IIRC you are on Darvocet for pain. That is a very mild pain
medication and some people (including me) find it little better than tylenol.
It may be that you really need something a bit stronger for the first few
days post-op. If the pain is still as bad today, you might consider calling
the surgeon's office to see if you can get a couple days of something a bit
stronger.

Mel,
I don't know if you remember the first post you put up in our group
about your knee getting scoped, but in my response to you, I wrote that
the first few days after your scope, you should be able to walk on the
leg you had scoped, but you would also wonder what the heck you had
gotten yourself into! Not uncommon for any type of surgery!!! Usually
the first day or two after a surgery you think to yourself, maybe I made
a mistake or what did I do to myself? You have to remember, that this
WAS surgery and it is going to hurt pretty bad for a couple of days, and
then you should start seeing it improve more and more with each passing
day. Most important for the first few days is to take your pain meds
and stay ahead of the pain! If you wait until the pain gets bad before
you take your pain meds, you will be fighting to catch up the whole
time. Stay ahead of the pain!!! Also important to keep the leg
elevated and ice off and on regularly! You are not a whimp, this is
just the way it is after a surgical procedure! Although every one is
different, you will continue to have pain and swelling for a while, but
within a month or two, you will hardly know that you had the surgery
done and should be feeling much better. It does take, though, about a
year, until the knee will be completely healed on the inside and before
you can kneel on that knee! The first day or two after a surgery are
usually the worst and the roughest with any type of surgery! Like Nann
said, it is an assault on your body! Give it a bit more time, go easier
on yourself, and stay ahead of the pain for now!!!

You nailed it: I was thinking what the hell did I get myself into.
Today is better.
I cut the heavy pressure bandage off today, which helped.
I will be using crutches only about 10% of the time today (just my guess
based on how I feel)
There is quite a bit of swelling, as expected, although not as much as I
feared.
There were only 2 incisions-- I expected 3. They look a bit raw but not too
bad (definitely not oozing or infected).
It still is difficult to navigate -- as you said, it IS surgery.
Anyway, I'm more optimistic today.
BTW, knee is quite stiff. I didn't expect that. I assume it's the swelling
within the joint??
Time will tell if surgery was the right move

So you had somebody cut holes in you,, stick a scope in your knee knobs
and look around and make some changes and then pulled all that equipment
back out again? You say it still hurts after a day or two?
Duh.
I had a shoulder done and it hurt for days, but the shoulder moved
better immediately.
A cousin of mine had both knees done. One was done the old way with
surgery and he was laid up for weeks. The other was done with the scope
and it hurt for days but he could walk on it before the day was out.
Take your pick.

Yeah, I know intellectually you are right. The surgery is recent.
Right now my knee is terrible -- much worse than before the surgery (unlike

Hopefully, that will change soon.

Huh?
When you're complaining about the obvious a friend is likely to point out,
out of friendship, that you are complaining about the obvious, and
rightfully so. The friend might then go on to point out that he had had
similar complaints but that, strictly in the spirit of counting one's
blessings, that the obvious complaint of the moment is likely to pass in
the rather near future. Having been thus reminded the complainer might be
inclined to reassert patience.
That's what I think.

I would imagine so. It may feel a bit stiff for a few days after the visible
swelling goes down as the swelling within the joint is the last to clear out.
When I'm recovering from either surgery or injury, I now remind myself of
what the surgeon told me after my horrible wrist break - that recovery begins
the moment the injury (or surgery) stops. Even all that pain and swelling is
part of the healing process. Psychologically, it helps. (he was telling me
this to explain why surgery on a break has to happen sooner rather than
later, but it transfers to other stuff as well.)

Things are not going well at all.
I was making some progress, but as of late yesterday things are going in

I've gone from decreasing pain to pretty severe pain. I've gone from using
crutches less and less (about 10%) to needing them again.
I hope this surgery doesn't turn out to be a disaster.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{ Mel }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Mel,
Sorry to hear you are still struggling! It's only been a few days since
your surgery, so give your poor body some time, it really will get
better!!! Your knee has had a major trauma to it with the injury and
then the surgery and the cutting away of part of your meniscus plus what
ever else they may have done in there. Don't over do things and make
sure you are keeping your leg elevated, iced, and keeping ahead of the
pain. Can't stress enough how important it is to keep ahead of the pain
and not let it get out of control!!! If your pain meds are insufficient
and not doing the job, call the doctor and get something stronger to
cover you!
If things get too out of hand and you don't think you can make it
through the weekend, you can always go to the ER for evaluation or call
the doctor for stronger pain meds.
Rest, elevate, elevate, and elevate some more, ice often, stay ahead of
the pain by taking your pain meds before the pain gets unbearable, and,
if the knee is wrapped, keep the knee wrapped to help keep the fluid
from accumulating in the joint. The wrapping helps keep the incisions
covered and helps keep fluid moving and from building up too much in the
joint. Follow all instructions given you carefully and completely!
Sending prayers that the pain starts to ease up for you soon and that
you will truly see an improvement once the healing process is more
underway!
The first week is always the roughest!!!

| | | Re: am I a wimp--knee surgery still HURTS Good advice from Donna, Mel. I haven't had knee surgery but am
having a really bad week with pain in knee, lower back and wrist
and elbow. It is sooooooo important to keep ahead of the pain if
possible. I use ice, sometimes heat, but I'm not sure heat is
what you need after surgery. Lot of rest. Is there anything that
takes you into another place, like music? Reading is good but if
the pain is too bad you won't be able to concentrate.
And you are NOT a wimp. Pain is subjective, we all react in
different ways to different types of pain. Some can have major
surgery and smile, yet the same person may not be able to stand
having a splinter removed.
Be kind to yourself, and if it gets too bad, get something to
knock it on its back. Pain can escalate, and far better to have a
shot of something stronger now so you can get control and get on
with getting better.
Good luck, Mel. Heal quickly.

That's not good, but it's only been a couple of days, right? Feel free
to call the doc and complain if it isn't going according to prediction,
but take it easy and don't push it too much and see how it goes. Maybe

I had my left hip joint replaced in 2003. You are experiencing
exactly what I experienced in the first 3 weeks of the healing
process. I had even convinced myself that the pain was no different
[though more intense] than the pain that had led to the surgery.
I'm sure that advice like Donna's is the right way to handle
this, but there's a component of individual personality involved
too. I got through it with nothing more than about 5 Tylenol pills
from before surgery through full recovery and *a lot* of complaining
leavened with a humorous attitude toward it all.
And I kept moving on the crutches.
My metal/plastic hip joint celebrated its 5th birthday in March.
I'm still doing everything by walking and bicycling [no car, don't
use much public transportation unless there's snow on the ground]
Keep moving; keep complaining, but try to laugh through the
tears.

It's really the fear that something is messed up. If I knew in advance that
it would be like this say for a couple of weeks then that's fine.
But my understanding was different and it started out that way, slowly
getting better.
I called my surgeon today. He gave the same advice in terms of ice/elevation
and taking ibuprofin. If it isn't better Monday I'm to call his office and
he will see me that day.

There are plenty of ways to express an idea WITHOUT being sarcastic and
rude to a newbie or to someone who is legitimately scared.
I don't expect you to understand that though, as this is your usual M.O.
You show up in this group and a number of others, ask for advice usually
and then balk at everyone that tries to be helpful, or you just attack
and pick fights. Typical. You've done that over and over again way too
many times to count!
So, I guess I should consider the source!

I drop in and get an answer maybe and maybe not. I chat elsewhere.
Now lady, I'm going to say this once.
It has been a long day. My fingers are sore, my hands ache. My knees
hurt. My ankles hurt. My feet I can hardly stand on. I can just barely
type out something on this machine without having to correct it too often
and among the things I can do without is being bitched at by brawd who
complains about the way I write. So you and your anegles can go jump in
the nearest lake.
I'm puttying you in my bozo file and will, therefore, never hear your
whining, complaining, bitching voice again.
I apolobize for any unpleasantness, but it has been a long and painful day
and I don't need some silly lecture by a would be guardian of style.

| | | Re: am I a wimp--knee surgery still HURTS Didn't the doctor put you on physical therapy? I had to have two weeks of
it. Yes, my knee hurt worse than before the surgery and I couldn't even
bend it after the surgery, but the pt really helped (I had good practice
yelling!) I'm like you, two bandaids and it hurts like that? Hang in there
and do the exercises you should have been given, if no pt and it will get
much better than before.
To get back to your situation. Yes, it is going to hurt like heck for a
while. Bend it (through the tears) as soon as you can and do everything
they tell you. Also, take your pain medication on a regular basis. Don't
wait for it to hurt as you'll never really catch up on it.

Hi Mel,
Of course it is going to hurt for awhile. My doctor told me to use a walker
and he gave me pain medication
Be patient, pray a lot.

I agree Donna. Take medication as the doctor instructed and of course it is
going to be painful. Surgery is painful but everything has to run it's course.
When one has surgery on any part of the body, it is a shock to your system.
Be patient and pray a lot. You will heal and feel better.

Hi Mel,
I am sure you are having a hard time. Be patient and ask the doctor for
stronger medication. I had the same surgery and getting ready to do the
other knee. I don't look forward to it but I know I will feel better in time.
Both my knees had tears in the miniscus and I already had one repaired and
surgery is scheduled for sometime next week (I hope) I want to get it over
with.
The doctor had prescribed Darvocet but I also have Vicadin. The Vicadin
upsets my stomach more but will take it if needed.
Hope you will heal fast.
