Default Ankle pain - anterior impingement

For ages and ages I've had some pain in my left ankle that's not like
the typical pain of a rolled ankle. I've only just found out this type
of ankle pain is actually called Anterior Impingement. For the medical
people, it's more or less a sort of pinching problem between my tibia/
fibula, and my talus bone. For the non-medical people, it's the part
of my ankle that is on top of my left foot, and about 45 degrees to
the left side.
The pain is agonising when I try to walk, first thing in the morning.
It really grabs me when I transfer weight from heel to forefoot, and
sort of roll onto the inner edge of my left foot. I think this is
called Supination. Also, walking down stairs is agony in the morning.
If I walk on the outer edge of my left foot (pronation), this relieves
the pain. Bigtime.
I am hoping someone might be able to tell me if there are any
exercises that can relieve this problem? I just cannot figure out how
to relieve this problem.

This is by no means medical advice, just ideas from an ankle
patient...but ive had the opposite problem with my right ankle,
spraining it horribly to the outside. What ive done, and may work for
you is before getting out of bed (in your case) do some pronating
stretching to both ankles, turning your foot to the inside and holding
for 10 seconds each stretch, and emphasize walking on that portion of
the foot, as that is where our soles are meant to fall rather than on
the inside arches, which could lead to fallen arches or flat
feet....Again consult with your doctor first, who will likely refer
you to a podiatrist.....the above is similar to what i was told by
mine...along with a cortisone injection. perhaps orthodic shoe
implants will be prescribed which did wonders for my son who was born
flat footed.

PS- I also had anterior impingement for years following that anterior
ankle fracture in EXACTLY the same place you're describing. I still have
it, and it makes moving on my now shattered ankle (from a different
incident) MUCH MUCH more difficult.

Go see your doctor. There may be calcification there. I broke my ankle
years before my leg was severely damaged and while investigating that
damage they found the calcifications and some small bone fragments from
where the ankle was fractured years before and the ligament had been
partially pulled free.

At the time, I had said I'd broken my ankle but no one believed me
because I was still walking on it. A decade later I broke both feet
three times each and no one believed me because I was still walking on
it. When they discovered the stress fractures in the feet I fractured my
spine for the fourth time getting up off the MRI table.

Go get your ankle properly evaluated and at least x-rayed. You may need
to go to physiotherapy to help fix it if it's something relatively
minor. If it isn't something relatively minor, you can get it addressed
before it gets worse.

Ari

I don't know that there are any exercises that will help this, as it is two
of the bones bumping in to one another, i have read steroid injections or a
heel lift can be helpful as your foot does not have to flex as far when you
walk. If these fail then arthroscopic surgery usually fixes the problem

And what doctor(s) have you seen about the pain?

You failed to mention how long "ages and ages" is, your age, general health,
occupation and other items that would dictate the type of exerercises.
Something laypeople in a support group such as this might suggest something
that would make the condition worse. We are not medically trained.

A good doctor would refer you to physical and/or occupational therapy, to
teach you exercises and ways to avoid doing anything to aggravate/irritate
the ankle.

..... Any given program, when running, is obsolete.

Ari, when I broke my right ankle in February, and I thought it was sprained,
I walked on it all day before going to the doctor. I more or less walked on
my heel. It hurt if I put my whole foot down, but walking on my heel didn't
hurt much.
