Bouchard's Nodes

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help me. I have noticed lately
that the fingers on my hands are beginning to change shape quite
rapidly it seems. My knuckles seems to be jutting out at the side on
my middle knuckles on all of my fingers. It doesn't seem painful as of
yet. The doctor looked at my hands and said that he didn't think that
it was arthritis, but advised me to go for an X-ray. I am still very
worried as my fingers are definitely all changing shape as a result of
what I think through research must be Bouchard's nodes as there
doesn't seem to be any other explanation on the internet. I am
extremely worried by the rapid nature of this development. I only
noticed it a few days ago and everyone who has seen it apart from my
doctor would agree that something doesn't look right.
There is no pain at the moment. I was wondering if this is a
definite sign of arthritis or is there any other reason why my knuckle
joints would be growing out at the side of my finger. Also, is the
rapid nature of this something to worry about? Many thanks

My best advice is to talk to your doctor about seeing a Rheumatologist.

My main worry is that it has affected a lot of joints at once and I'm
afraid that it could be septic arthritis

Michael, both my index fingers and middle fingers have the "growth" at the
top joints (next to nails). In my case, after having my hands x-rayed last
week by my Rheumy, it is Osteoarthritis. But, I also have Rheumatoid
Arthritis. The x-rays can no doubt identify whether it is Arthritis or
Bouchard's nodes. Nanny

Doctors often avoid worrying patients unnecessarily about stuff. The
question is whether your doctor is taking the appropriate first step in
determining what is causing your fingers to change shape. My thinking is
that he is doing just that. Get the XRays done and find out what they tell
the experts. Then follow-up on whatever they recommend as the next step.
Don't borrow troubles and worries from the future until you know what you are
dealing with. And remember that a calm-appearing doctor is not necessarily a
negligent doctor - the key is what is being recommended diagnostically.

The doctor said it wasn't arthritis and confirmed that by examing x-
rays,
however all my PIP joints (middle knuckles) are swollen all of a
sudden and he has given me no explanation as to why
this is the case. I might need to consult a rheumatoligist
