hi tdubya - haven't seen you post in a long time - glad to see you come
out of lurker mode.
there are several ways to do it, which one i use depends upon variables
presented - perhaps the fastest, [quick and dirty - not always 100%
accurate] way is a 'whois' tool that you can download for free and run
on your machine if you are online [it runs a query to several web
databases].
one such is:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptwhois.asp
works for ip numbers as well as website names.
now, this only gives you the server info - there are other ways to track
it even further, often times back to the specific location when/if
necessary.
a web based one is:
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation
but it often has problems with servers/ip numbers in asia and eastern
europe - does fine for north america
but in and of itself, neither will tell if the poster was directly using
that ip, or, was it an open proxy post on another system - spammers
often resort to such. to tell, you have to examine a bit more.
news posts are also sometimes problematic - by example, you use
zilla@aol.com, but post off of bellsouth news server
so your actual location is obscured by the newsserver - but that info
gives more than enough to use other 'ferret' tools to locate you
[anyone].
