Default Catch up time

Since I was last on, I thought y'all might like to know what's been going on
the past year.

My mom had congestive heart failure and spent 2 weeks in the hospital and
then a couple of weeks in Rehab at a nursing home. She is back home now.
They discovered she was diabetic when she was there, so we have to check her
sugar twice a day. She watches what she eats and tries to avoid things that
are too high in carbohydrates and sugars. She gets a lot of things that
have Splenda in them. Other than that, we pretty much eat normally. She
has to watch her legs for swelling, too. She is on Lasisk 2 in the morning
and 2 at noon. The one problem with her fluids is: heart congestive diet
says no more than 1500 cc a day and the diabetic diet says no less that 1500
cc a day. Ha! Caught between a rock and a hard place.

Then, I had surgery on my back for a slipped disc. Recovery was uneventful,
though I do have a reasonable amount of "phantom" pain from the nerves that
got severed during the surgery. They are slowly getting better, though.
The thing is the feelings are mostly pins and needles down my left leg with
a feeling of water flowing around my knee. Mom said she had a lot of that
after her partial breast removal due to cancer. She has also had colon
cancer in the past and is now considered cancer free.

I have had the five shots in my left knee of Supartz (a version of Hyalgan).
They did pretty well. I still use my cane because my knee has pulled the
old slip when I'm not looking trick. I also got hearing aids last year, but
only use them when I am going out to a place where there are a variety of
speakers. At home, I hear the floors creak, etc, and really don't want to
hear that. Other things are all right. I mostly got them because I was at
a Toastmasters' meeting and couldn't hear the speaker that got voted as best
speaker. I know I probably should wear them all the time. I'll tell you
one place that they come out fast and that's in most restaurants!

My mom had her 90th birthday in June (as those who looked at the photo page
would have seen) and we had a fabulous time. I kept it very simple, just
asked all the relatives to come (handling their own transportation and room
and board here), ordered pizzas the first night and had a cold cut and
cheese platter that I made at noon the second day. For the big dinner, we
went to Texas Roadhouse and everybody ordered and paid for their own meal.
One of my sisters and her husband picked up Mom's meal. The only time the
TV was turned on was when somebody wanted to check a ball game score, then
it went off again. Everybody was having too much fun just talking to people
they hadn't seen since my Dad's memorial service after he died in January
2001.

So, that in general is what has been going on. There have been a few trips
to Emergency via ambulance. If my Mom can't move enough to get to the car,
I don't even try to lift her, I just call the ambulance. The hospital is
about ten minutes up the freeway which is a mile from the house, so it's
easy to get there. It's a small hospital, so we usually see the same
doctor.

Other than all that, time has been quietly slipping by and finally calming
down a bit. Oh, I had a cement driveway put in a while back and also had a
sprinkler systerm (front and back yard) put in. We just had a rain storm
blow by (horizontal rain!), so will need to check the rain gage. There is
more rain coming according to the radar. Maybe I had better go get the mail
before the next batch comes. Anyhow, that's what's been going on.

The reason I dropped out was I couldn't get my newsgroup reader program to
work after my computer crashed. When they dropped support for my email
program, I changed to Outlook and was thrilled to see that I could get my
newsgroups through Outlook Express.

I'm back. Hooray. Now to get caught up on everybody else.

That is one thing that bugs me with the cochlear implant. Most people just
do not realize how noisy restaurants are. It was the same with my hearing
aid. There is just no way I can carry on any kind of a conversation in a
restaurant. I get tired of waitstaff that ask all sorts of questions that I
can't understand and answer. Not their fault of course.

I know what you mean,,,, I realized I needed a hearing aid when all I
could hear was the kids behind me and not the speaker in front of me. :-)

Ps I have got copper in the ground now,,,, and I hope it is never tested.
