crappy news

My sister Iris found out that she has infection in her knee. It is now
almost the second anniversary of her initial replacement. She was on
antibiotics for about 18 months (or whatever it was), had a revision,
and things seemed to be fine. She did have pain though and it has been
getting worse.

Oh No, that is crappy. I have followed her terrible experience with
that knee and hoped it
was a done deal with the revision. The poor lady must be so very
disappointed. I will pray for her to get rid of this infection
promptly.

Hi Rose. I had a TKR in 2000, but the surgeon who did mine never stops
antibiotics when getting dental work and invasive tests at the hospital
(like a colonoscopy). An acquaintance of mine recently fell directly on the
knee joint replacement and broke the hardware inside. He had a horrible
time. They had to replace it, then it wouldn't heal right, etc. I'm doing
fine with mine, but I'm sorry to hear about your friend's problems. Nanny

Nanny, I have a THR and I always take antibiotics when having even a
cleaning of my teeth.

It is a very small percentage of people that do have problems, Nanny.
I had my first tkr when i was 24, and then had a thr two years later,
had a tkr the following year, and had a revision of the first tkr the
summer after that along with an elbow debridement. My first surgery
was in 1979.
I don't go on antibiotics for routine procedures, and that too is
under the orders of my RD. There are mixed opinions regarding the
necessity of doing so. Because of my relative age and risk of
developing resistance, the recommendation for me was not to take
antibiotics prophylactically although I am on low-dose long-term
doxycycline for the prevention of sinus infections.

I am in no way against surgery or trying to deter people from having
surgery. Without surgery, my life would have been much, much
different. I had my surgeries before the time when they were routinely
done. My original prosthesis was a Gunston TKR, performed BY Dr.
Gunston who was the pioneer in TKRs. He invented the hardware that was
used at the time. (Interestingly he was an engineer first, who became
a surgeon- hence the interest in 'technology').

Prior to the Gunston prosthesis the joint implanted was essentially a
hinge that gave very limited mobility. Gunston's prosthesis was still
similar to the hinge, and that is why, in my case since I was so
young, it loosened.

be going down this road again! Please let her know that we are praying

Thanks so much to each and every one who responded. She is discouraged
and is also in pain.I am worried for what the future may bring if this
infection is not brought under control.

Update:
My sister went back to her doc, and found out there was a mistake. The
exray that they were looking at was from last year at this time. For
some reason there was a computer glitch- or perhaps someone had placed
in the wrong year. Anyway, there is no new infection.

She does have pain, and likely will continue to have pain for the
long term because of the fact that she had the infections over the 18
months and all the multiple surgeries that she had to debride the
knee.

It is funny, but I wondered if there was a chance they were looking at
the wrong exray.

So actually there is no need to panic. She was placed on a strong
antibiotic when they thought it was in her knee again, but that may be
ok because she was experiencing an ear and sinus infection anyway.

That is just awesome news. Now for her to wrap her mind around 'I'm OK'.
She has been through an awful scare. even if it was a blessing in disguise.
It could have come in a less frightening surprise.

oh lordy. unreal. i'd be mad and glad at the same time. i am so happy
it's not a new infection and i hope she has no negative repercussions
from the strong antibiotic.

Wow. What a roller-coaster ride for her to take! Hopefully the pain will
back off some as her body heals further from all it went through. Just
getting the strength back in that leg must be a long-term project now.

What a relief for all of you. Hugs to your sister. heehee, what do you want
to bet she asks them to double-check the date on every Xray they look at from
now on?

That really is awesome news, Rose. The antibiotic should help with the ear
and sinus infection so maybe it was good they got mixed up about the knee!

Thanks to all who posted. I am sure Iris felt a whole range of
emotions, but relief would certainly have been at the top of the list.
It was the locum that she saw when the news was given, and her family
doctor days later when the error was explained. She really likes the
locum so I'm sure was ready to forgive him for the error.

As to the effects of taking the stronger antibiotic, she has been
quite resistant to antibiotics, so perhaps the choice was not bad for
the sinus/ear infections. I hope not anyway. She will not want to deal
with problems down the road should there be a need for the big
antibiotic guns.

This is good news Rose,

I talked with Rosie yesterday on her bday and I told her and she thought
this was good too. I have been keeping her updated on some of what is going
on here and who needs our thoughts etc.
