Default Disability

Trying to get some general views from average people on disability and the
havoc involved. Yes, I have worked enough years to qualify and yes I have
extensive RA history. Also, double laminectomy at L4 and L5 and now showing
signs of kidney disease-From Ibuprofen my guess as well as extensive damage
to right ankle and extensive distortion/damage to right hand. Blood pressure
also seems to be going up for unknown reasons-not dramatically though.

It has been tough to keep/get a job, and now my body is feeling its oats. I
am in my mid 40's

PC Doctor already stated he would sign the papers. RA doctor is in Europe on
a sabbatical, go figure.

I have read a bit on the net and most things are negative. I generally feel
like my body is going down the otherside of the mountain now, and feel as
though there really is not much left to hope for.

Remicade, Prednisone7.5mgs for the last 15 years, Methotrexate 15mgs for the
last ten yrs, Ibuprofen 2400 mgs(Yea I know a GI bleed coming) for the last
ten years. Some pain pills when the doctors seem sympathetic-not often.

Depressed.

Any info/experience/etc/etc would be appreciated.

Good day,

Warren

Warren,
I was one of the lucky few who got SSDI on the first try with only a
five month waiting period before my first check appeared. If you feel
you can not work for at least a year and your doctors agree, I would
apply right away.
One thought about the kidney disease and high blood pressure.....are you
seeing a nephrologist? The nephrologist is the one who discovered my
kidney disease while researching the reason for my constant high blood
pressure.

Warren- I wish you luck with your application. When I applied back in 2001,
I found a tremendous amount of information and help/advice on a Yahoo
disability group. The link is Disinissues-subscribe@yahoogroups.com But I
see it is very much inactive now-a-days. If you could check some of the
posts from the 2000-2004 range you will find wonderful info and helpful
links. I'm sure sorry it's no longer active- it offered a great service to
folks applying for disability.

I have had high blood pressure for years and have been taking two meds in
the morning and two at night to try to keep it down. Week before last I
started feeling faint every time I stood up. For several days I was sitting
down most of the time, and was okay while sitting. Fortunately I already
had an appointment with my doctor for last week.

When the nurse took my BP, it was 100/60. I don't remember it ever being
that low before. When I had my one year check on my ICD, they said it
showed that I had fluid around my heart and put me on 40 mg. of lasix every
day. My doc said she thought I was dehydrated. She sent me for blood work
and an xray; said she couldn' be sure about my lungs since I have pulmonary
fibrosis. She had me stop the lasix and the 4 bp medicines if bp was low.
I had to take my bp early every morning and at night. The second night it
was 80/55, so I just stopped all the bp meds completely.

When I went back this week, she said I was slightly dehydrated so put me on
10 mg lasix daily instead of 40 (my legs were still swelling). Gradually
my bp has started back up and I see her again in two weeks with more blood
work one week before going back. I really felt good yesterday, but haven't
felt quite so good today. Hope tomorow will be back on the good side!
Gwen

You may have gone off the bp meds too fast or too many changes at once Gwen.
document the changes so you can tell her. As you say hopefully tomorrow
will be back on the good side.

That is great to see it going down though - nice to see a positive
occasionally isn't it.

you might want to drink something like pedialtye to keep hydrated. That can
cause problems with your heart if you are not hydrated enough.

I would not stop all 4 bp meds at one time, that might make your bp go up
too quickly. But that is just my opinion.

I hope you get to doing better and soon.
