Default Good News and 'Gooder' News

First, we just got back from a trip to Pennsylvania to see our daughter's
new place. She and Mike have bought 9.5 acres there and have had a barn
built. They just got their new tractor. We all (meaning our family, some of
her coworkers, some of his coworkers, friends and neighbors) went and had a
wonderful time. It's in a valley surrounded by Alleghenies and is absolutely
beautiful. Icing on the cake - I got to play with our 5 month old grandson
all weekend. He's just at the age for interaction now.....kiss his neck and
he tries to blow kisses on your neck. Since he's teething, it gets a bit
messy but I loved it! He gives hugs and knows his name. His little legs are
super strong and he prefers standing up. It was heaven.

Second, I am being approved for disability!! Allsup called this morning and
said SSA wanted to adjust some of the dates. They're going to use the date I
was diagnosed with cancer as the anchor disease date and all the other stuff
as justification to continue it. So they are adjusting both the onset date
and the retro date (I'll only get back paid from Sept. 07). As I told
Allsup, it's never been about the lump sum but always about having a steady
income. So in about 60-90 days, my disability will begin. The woman at
Allsup said it varied from case to case and your total family income as to
whether the disability was taxable and I should check with the IRS on that.
Hallelujah. It only took 2 years!

Absolutely it is taxable income. Ain't that something? You get money from the disability then end up paying a lot back in.

If you get a lump sum, make sure you take some of that for taxes out and see if you can do it right away or wait till tax
time. I did mine tax time. A lump sum gives you a big chunk back and since you are back dated it will tell you in a letter
how much you will receive and when and what day of the month. Are you having them put it in your checking of savings?

Since you will be getting a monthly disability check YES you will be taxed on that at the end of the year. NO Federal is
taken out of the monthly check so again YOU can ask them to take out 10% or what ever and if they do so then you have to fill
out a form for it. That way the end of the year and April you do not have to pay IN on that or at least not as much if you
    didn't take anything out.

I have mine set up to take out so much a month.
After you been on it a year I believe they will ask you if you want to take out Part B of medicare. i do not know how OLD You
are. If you are under the age of 65 then you still can get SS D medicare. If you have insurance then medicare and YES they
say take the medicare insurance when you are offered. THAT will be your first insurance and your other will be the secondary.
It is cheaper premium when first asked they told me...They pay office visits up to 80% then a write of then the secondary
    takes over.
ASK YOUR primary insurance if they WANT You to take it.

good for you on getting that.
    YOU deserve it

Congratulations on the disability approval. I know that I felt like I
had won the lottery when I got my approval and I did not have to jump
through all the hoops that you did nor wait so long. I didn't get a
lump sum, but it is treated as taxable. If you go to ssa.gov it will
    tell you all the details.

I'll have to call the IRS. I have a friend here who is on disability and
says it is not taxed by Ohio. I'm surprised at that so will ask. Also, I am
eligible for medicare come September (according to Allsup). I will reach 2
years then. Anyway, it all needs to be researched because these things are
almost always on a case by case basis.

For federal taxes, it is treated the same as regular social security.
How much of it you pay tax on depends on you overall family income.
Really strange formula they use to compute it. I'm a CPA and I got it
wrong on our return last year when I had to figure it without a
    computer.

The first year, if you get a lump sum payment, there is a formula so
that you won't pay any more in taxes than you would have if you'd got
it over the lump sum period.

A lot of states don't tax social security. Back in the day, federal
didn't tax it either and when they started many states did not.

Ooooh, I wish I had handled my almost 2 year back pay with disability
better. With other things I had done that year like selling stock and
paying off my house. It cost me pretty good.

Wish you had too. Back in the day I used to specialize in that sort
of tax planning. There are a lot of options available for a couple of
years around retirement and for a couple of years when there is a
death. It was a lot of fun to maximize those options and I felt like
I was doing a lot of good for those individuals involved.

Of course "the best laid plans" quote is true. Unless you can see the
future you are never going to get it all right.

Hey, Jo, I've been thinking I'm gonna have to see an accountant for some help
in straightening out the stuff I'll be getting from Mother's estate. I'm
almost tempted to drive back to where we *were* living as one of our clergy
spouse friends is an excellent accountant up there. But..... should most
decent accountants know how to juggle things for taxes around an estate? We
do have options as to how we take some of the money. And we're complicating
things by keeping the house in all our names for now. If I can get leads on
good accountants here, should they know what I need?
