Default Hip REsurfacing (Bad Experience)

After 5-6 yrs of pain - and 2 back surgeries for leg pain- finally an ortho
told me my hips were the problem. I had shallow hip sockets causing the hips
to wear out in my early 40s.

Hearing about Hip Resurfacing - and wanting to give this a shot- I found a
surgeon 4 hrs away who did this relatively new surgery.

Hip resurfacing saves the bone and puts a "cap" over the ball of the hip.
The rest of the procedure is basically like traditional hip replacement with
the "cup" put into the hip socket.

I had the HIP Resurfacing surgery on my LEFT hip - and after 5-6 days in
hospital - I was back home and doing P.T. with Home Health.

All was going great until I started having pain - about 2 wks post op.

One evening the pain grew so great that my Husband rushed me to local
E.R.!! After XRAYS and scans the problem was found ! My RESURFACED hip had
BROKEN !! The pain was unbearable until I got some I.V. pain med.

I was sent back to the original surgeon who had done the resurfacing - in
another state - 4 hrs away- via ambulance.

I had a TOTAL hip replacement - more hospital time . ...etc...

That was last August 2006 - and since then I also had my RIGHT hip TOTAL
hip replacement - no resurfacing for me - and it's been 2 months since my R.
hip surgery... (which was done by a doc in my state).

I wanted to post about Hip RESURFACING in hopes that it may help someone
else considering this new surgery. I heard of some people going to India
for this surgery. And it really concerns me that someone would travel that
far - only to come home and go thru what I went thru.

Hip Resurfacing may work for some - I understand it has been done for years
in the U.K.
I even "met" someone via internet who has had both her hips resurfaced
couple yrs ago and she is doing fine.

But it just was not the answer for me.

My surgeon should have checked my bone strength/density/ but he admitted
that he did not for someone under 50. I hope he has now started doing so.

I posted a couple times here years ago - and I just recently got newsgroups
again thru my ISP.

Best wishes to all !
kim
