| | | Infection Returning? Dang! Remember the ulcerated sore, or lesion, I had so long and was on 2
powerful antibiotics for? I was scheduled to have it surgically removed,
then it seemed to heal, so the surgery was canceled. Now, recently, the
place of the sore, and the sore itself, seem to be kicking up again and I
feel the old symptoms coming back. I see the surgeon in a week or two. I
just want him to cut the darn thing out so I'll know what is going on with
it! Nanny |

If it's MSR, oral or injected AB's aren't the best treatment. Did you
guys try a removal of necrotic tissue before along with some topicals? |

For sure any AI involvement will complicate things, however if you have
MSR, I don't see how steroidal creams will do anything to address that
specific issue. Lab tests are not 100% accurate. You may be positive but
the culture done wrong. What does your doc say you have and why are you
using these creams? What specific are they for? |

| | | Re: Infection Returning? Neither my Gyn nor surgeon has said "MSR"; however, they are a little vague
in diagnosing it. For instance, my Gyn who looked at it first and took a
culture, which came back "positive" said it was a bacterial (staph?)
infection. Started one antibiotic at that time. Then, my Rheumy came into
the picture, because when I saw him at my regular exam, I asked if he would
look at the sore, and he immediately remarked to me that I needed to see a
surgeon ASAP, at the very least to have it cleaned out. He made the
appointment with the surgeon before I left his office. Saw the surgeon, he
took another culture and it came back "negative". However, the sore was
still there and I was very uncomfortable with the symptoms. He cut out the
dead skin, cleaned it out and had the nurse wrap it. Set up the
appointment, but he had to cancel for an emergency operation. The nurse had
me come in, though, so she could look at it. By that time, it looked like
it was pretty much healed, but she set me up to come back in 2 months, which
is next week, I believe.
This doesn't mean a thing to me, but the surgeon said he would cut out the
tissue to see how deep it went, but to cross our fingers that it wouldn't
reappear, only bigger. He said he had a patient that had that type of sore
on his hip, and it took 3 surgeries to get rid of it. Oh, I almost forgot
to answer one of your questions. What are the creams for? To clear up the
rash that is in that area, which comes and goes when moisture (like
perspiration settles there).
I really have little knowledge of MSR, nor what he meant by "coming back,
only bigger". Do you or anyone else here know more than I do about
infections? Nanny

MSR is staph. It's a mutation of staph a. which is common on the skin.
This mutation is highly resistant to antibiotics. The common way to
handle superficial infections is excision (removal down to good flesh)
and then treat with normal care. In lieu of actual surgery, application
of maggots is very helpful (no joke) as they will eat the infected /
dead tissue but not touch the good tissue. They are better surgeons than
humans here.
If you look healed and it feels healed, then I'd not worry too much
about it. If you have the normal signs of an infection - redness,
swelling, pain, discharge, etc. then maybe you will need an excision.

relieves my mind somewhat. I had been fearing that even if the sore looked
like it had healed, there might be something going on under my skin, in the
pelvic area. It's hard to describe how it feels. I guess "creepy crawly"
would be a good description. There's no itching, just a burning sensation
along with it.

Since the wound has healed over, you can't use the maggots. Sorry....
Read all about it: http://www.monarchlabs.com/
IMO, you should always tell your doc about anything which you feel
unhappy. If your old wound doesn't feel right, then mention it. Don't be
shy or concerned about being a whiner or a GOMER. If you state your
concerns tersely and with an explanation of WHY you are concerned, he'll
listen.
IMO, your error was not asking a vital question. When the doc said your
wound tested positive, your next question should have been, "Positive
for what?" Armed with that info, you would become an informed patient.
Very important.
