Medication?

Hello,

I had mentioned on a previous post my inability to get any pain reliever
before my upcoming surgery (June 6th) I just talked to the surgeon's nurse
and she told me that it was his policy and did not believed on prescribing
any narcotics prior surgery, and she told to get Tylenol PM to sleep.
So I guess, I don't have a lot of choices, and will try my best, the pain is
worst at night, so I might try to rest during the Day..

There are non-narcotic pain relief medications available.

Aspirin and other blood thinners should be avoided for a week,
to prevent bleeding during and immediately after surgery.

Yes, 7 days according to him, but I had stop the Mobic, wasn't working, the
pharmacist told me to get some Benadryl to try to sleep, I don't think it
will help with the pain.
I hope he's more generous with pain relievers after the surgery.

Tylenol PM is Acetaminophen with Benadryl generic.

Hopefully you won't need as much after surgical correction but doctors
generally are hesitant to prescribe narcotics. Is there a pain doctor/clinic
in your area? They will often give narcotics or alternate pain medications
long term for arthritic pain both Pre and Post Operative. My hip surgeries
are 5 months past but I still get a months + supply of oxycodene to tide me
over the bad days. Check/shop around. Wishing you good luck and less pain
and discomfort in the days to come.

Bud, I don't know if there is difference on corrective, or complete hip
replacement, that's the one I'm getting the CHR, how long apart you had to
wait between the two surgeries? I am getting the left done in 2 weeks, but
the right one hurts as much, and when going to the class, they were showing
the triangle shaped pillow that hips surgeries patients have to sleep with
for 8 weeks, and I'm thinking, how does my right hip will feel, if I have to
lie down in one position for so long, how much are you able to do after 5
months?
Benaryl makes me a little sleepy and relaxed, so good for that.

I dunno how long one HAS to wait but it was almost a year between mine and I
did have total replacements and that is what I meant but the replaced one
was almost pain free within 3 months and then the 'good' hip (ha) started
hurting so bad that I gladly opted to have it replaced too. I have no 'hip'
pain now.

Escept for weakness from lack of use...my laziness... I can do almost
anything within reason and guidelines...no running or other high impact
stuff as that wears the plastic down too much, can't ride my motorcycle ;-).
I was using oxycodone and/or acetaminophen with naproxen and/or ibuprofen
between surgeries as the 'good' hip got gradually worse. I now use onycodone
and/or acetaminophen only once or twice a day, often with benadryl generic
at night as that's when I seem to get muscle pain in the thighs and calfs,
not in the hips. I lay that to the other arthritic changes in my lower back
which aren't too amenable to surgery and not that severe. I also have
arthritic knees and keeping my fingers crossed there. I was only required to
use the pillow for about a month during rehab but I still use a regular
small pillow between my legs because I found it very comfortable.

It seems to potentiate the pain medications to some extent too. I use the
generic acetaminophen (Tylenol) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) because of
the price differential. Good luck in your surgery. If you're like most I've
met with total replacement you will be glad you had it done. I discarded the
walker after a month's rehab and just went to a cane when I got home. I
still use a cane but more for balance and out of habit and do occasionally
get around without it. Best to you, Kiki.

Bud, I do thank you for all the good info you gave me, kind of let go of
some of my fears, I guess its normal to be afraid about any type of surgery,
and I appreciate the *good luck* as for the second hip I hope I can wait at
least a good year before getting it, but I will see what the surgeon says.

Someone - at least one - in this group had both hips replaced at the same
time. But you have to have a great network of family and possibly church
members to help you once you return home.

I had THR for my left hip in 2000, and we (I, the rheumy and the surgeion)
are planning for the right hip this summer.

You could have the right replacement within 2 to 3 months.

I could sleep on the left (replaced) hips and my back - I wasn't limited to
one position.

I was out and about, riding the buses and trolley and light grocery shopping
within 4 weeks. I had stocked up on canned goods and meat/fish/poultry that
I could freeze, but I needed fresh produce once in awhile.

I stopped using the walker at the end of 8 weeks - relied on a cane after
that.

Thank you Chief, more good feedback, I think the Nurse at the class I had to
take, says 2 to 3 months, depending on the first one, but I will see how the
first one goes.
How is the pain on your RT one now, and what meds are you taking waiting to
get it replaced, at the end I was getting injections on both, but stopped,
the results were poor after a while.
You have a good week end, and hope that your July surgery will be as good as
the first one, but I will be back in the group before my surgery and after,
and I'm sure will have a bunch of questions.:-)

The RT hip is bearable. It doesn't wake me up during the night every 60 to
90 minutes like the LT hip did before replacement (5 or 6 years beyond when
it should have been done).

I'm on Soma and Ultram. I had one injection on the RT and it did absolutely
nothing. I'm hopeful that the THR will correct my pace/posture and
eliminate some of the other aches/pains I feel.

Oy! some surgeons need to experience these things themselves so they have
more understanding for the patients! Hang in there - I know you must be
counting the days!
