Default OTP - My big toe has an infection

I've been having a lot of trouble with my big toe and an ingrown toenail
for some time and yesterday it was all infected. I got all the 'stuff'
out but this morning it was still all red and purple, so I figured I'd
better go to the podiatrist. They fit me in (nice people that they are)
and it's a good thing I went as my nail was deeply imbedded in the skin.
He numbed my toe and took a big piece of nail out. He said once it
heals, I won't have the ingrown toenail problem anymore. But now that
the numbness is coming out, I'm thinking it's time for some tylenol. Or
maybe some wine and cheese ) OK, I admit it, I just need some sympathy
))

((((((((((((((((((Carole)))))))))))))) keep a close eye on that and make
sure it is healing properly. A local (older) firend had one that didn't last
year and it turned into an epic nightmare. And take a couple xtra strength
tylenol and a glass of wine....

I have had so much trouble with this for the last two years. For me they
are not so much in grown toenails as the skin being so swollen it envelopes
the toes. I find I check them regularly now, and try to get to my
esthitician weekly - she calls it a colour change but for $15.00 a week
makes sure my toenails are cut right, nothing is embedded and that the feet
themself are healthy etc. It sure is a nice treat for myself.

The pain is real Carole but does tend to improve quickly. Take the tylenol
and maybe the wine too! Epson salts and water soaks help too.

Glad they fit you in so quickly! Sympathy is good by the way. Gentle hugs.

Carole, so glad they numbed your toe. For years I have had to cut out
ingrown toenails, but now with a replaced hip that I have dislocarted 4
times I'm afraid I'll dislocate again if I try to do those on the right
foot. Since I need a podiatrist for one foot I decided I might as well let
him get both. Well, he cut them out but he did not numb them, and I though
he was going to kill me before he finished! You can bet I won't go back to
the same one. On top of that, they will only file insurance with Medicare,
won't file with my supplement. Therefore I had to pay him and then it's up
to me to get the money back from my supplement. The one time is all he'll
see of me.
I had toenails cut out on both feet about 10 or so years ago, but that
didn't stop them from growing back.
By the way, I really do sympathize with you,
Gwen

Sounds as if you need several of those things, Carole, well maybe
not wine and Tylenol at the same time but one of those and lots
of sympathy. Sounds nasty.

Carole, that sounds perfectly awful! I'm so sorry you're having this
problem with your toe. One thought- I don't know if you've had any joints
replaced, but if so you should probably be on antibiotics so the infection
won't settle in the prosthesis. I hope it gets all healed up very quickly.

I have to go back to him in two weeks so he can make sure it's healing
properly. But he told me to check it and if I saw anything that didn't
look right, to call him right away. So I will, I promise! Since I
have disbetes I have to be very careful with this kind of stuff.

Thanks, Kelly. My toe is feeling a little better today, and it's not all
red like it was yesterday morning

I used to have a place that I went to every week when I was in NYC. But
out here it's much more expensive. In NYC there are so many nail salons,
that if you go M-T-W, you can get a manicure and pedicure for $15. We
had a place near where I worked that was the best. It was very clean and
they did a good job. Wish I could find a place like that in B'ham.

Sounds like that doctor is the pits! I wouldn't go back to him either.
My podiatrist is very good. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, he
was recommended to me. And I like him a lot. He asked me if I wanted to
watch and I said "no" so he got me a magazine to hold up so I didn't
have to see, and he put the chair back in a more relaxing position. My
toe was so sore yesterday that he wouldn't have been able to work on it
if he didn't numb it. I would have kicked him, LOL!

I hope you find a nicer doctor like mine.

No replacements, so no worries there. He told me to keep an eye on it
and to put Neosporin and a bandaid on it until it heals. I also have to
see him in two weeks so he can check it. I'm glad I have open toed shoes
to wear!

Had that done to both my big toes some years ago and once over the
initial pain and the healing, been great. The place where the nail was
removed is still sensitive -- probably the nerves are annoyed but only
when I am getting my nails done -- never in shoes and the like although
I only wear open toed Birks except when dancing.

I asked the man that removed a good 1/4" off both big toes about them
growing back and he said that since he was taking the base, it was
unlikely. I was well numbed for that though and there was a lot of
blood. But I walked out of there.
Can't imagine that done without numbing but when I would go in before
that and have him cut back the ingrown section, there was no numbing and
it hurt a lot. After about 6 months of this, he said do you want to do
this for the rest of your life or do you want to fix this permanently. I
opted for the permanent fix.

He wouldn't have been able to do it without numbing it first. It was
VERY sensitive. What you got done is what I had done, Duckie. It's
still a bit tender today, but nothing like it was yesterday

I'm starting a photography class tonight, so I'll have to wear either my

That is good to hear. Man I do not miss the ever continuing saga of
those toes always being ingrown. Seems like a distant memory now.

You know, after reading everyones responses, it makes me kind of wonder
why as we get older our toenails start to get oddly shaped and why they
seem to become ingrown more often?

It was. But I have to tell you that I had to change the bandage today,
and it looks yucky. I hope it heals fast or I'm going to be wearing
bandaids on my big toe for a long time.

I don't know. But the nails on my two big toes are ugly, and they were
never ugly when I was younger.

While I am thinking about it, I did have to wear fancy shoes several
weeks afterward and I went to the ballet supply store and bought this
exlarge big 'jelly' toes they sell to pointe shoe ladies. Let me see if
I can find a link because they slipped right over the Band-Aid and the
shoe didn't bother me at all.

Okay, the jelly toes don't have an end and the jelly tip was too small
for my big toe which is why I got the big tip. You just cut them off --
be sure it is not too much at once -- maybe 1/8" and then another 1/8".

Those look great! I was looking for something like that at the drug
store, but they only had things for fingers. It says that they have them
at Creative Dancewear, so I'll give them a call and see if they have them.

Thanks, Duckie!

I don't have an answer for that but I wonder if it could have
anything to do with the shoes we wore, you know, the pointed toes
and all that. I wore duty shoes for so many years my toes didn't
have the opportunity to do strange things. When our feet are
"young" perhaps they tend to change shape more easily. Then add a
"small" detail like arthritis.. Not sure if this makes sense or
not. So far my feet are fine, thank goodness and they are
certainly well lived in!

Yeah they always say it is the shoes that does it, but I usually run around
shoeless so that isn't what did mine in. Don't know what caused it.

Carole, would you rather I skip the big toe when I play "This little
piggie..." with your other toes? Nanny
