Default OTP? No newsgroups on RoadRunner after June 23!

It's true. I checked when Nanny mentioned it. I sure hope they were going
to let us know before the 22nd! (said with tongue in cheek!). Now they can
put all that other good stuff on. My oldest son says it is because so many
places are going to forums - specialized talk groups, I guess you would say.
Oh, well. What a day.

Tell me about it. My oldest son says it is because so many sites are going
to forums.

Here's an outside news service that works pretty good: http://news.motzarella.org/ I'm using it myself right now so I know it carries this group.

It's entirely free including free registration and they have instructions for setting it up with various newsreaders/clients like OE, Windows Live Mail, etc.

For what's it worth I gave up on Roadrunner's newsgroup service awhile ago, and
got a membership with an outside service (Newsguy.com). Didn't like paying for
newsgroup access, but they've been reliable & less hassle than RR.

No missing posts, a newsgroup search engine, NNTP or Web access, and they have
options as cheap as $3 month.

I saw this on their website today, and it looks like they're giving away a
freebie month of newsgroup access to Roadrunner customers
(http://newsguy.com/roadrunner.htm) that may be useful to some.

Since Verizon is getting rid of *only* the alt. groups, I wonder if there
would be any pity given to their customers. After the 24th (must have wanted
to see what RoadRunner was going to do) there'll be rec, comp, talk, and
five others. Of course, the majority of the groups I post/lurk in are alt.

I'm using Motzarella right now and am test driving aioe with another ng. The
funny thing is I started using them before the NY AG said anything and
nothing to do with Verizon's service before then. I just like experimenting
with stuff.

I think they're all throwing out the baby with the bath water.

Paul and I have been trying to hold misc.health.arthritis in case what is
happening with servers and ISPs takes place. If alt. is removed by
ISPs or dropped,,,, there is always MHA which is close to being dropped by
some servers due to lack of use.

I switched to news.mozarella.org. Free! I do miss the halting response of
RR's news server, but I'll adjust.

Things will get trickier if the ISP's decide to block port 119, but there
are well-known end runs available.
