WELCOME HOME!!!

Hope you had a most wonderful and renewing get away! Am anxious to hear
all about it when you feel up to letting us know!

Also want to thank you for nudging me a bit to take some time away from
everything. I have been doing that and feeling much more positive and
renewed by the time away from all the doctors. It definitely helps and
is something I need to do once in a while to keep my sanity in tact.
Well, what little I have of it anyways!!! ROFL!!!

Just wanted to say welcome home and you were missed!

Default Re: Ping Kelly E.

Thanks Donna - walked in the door about 2 hours ago. It was a great time
away but also a painful one. My wrists and knees are flaring so badly and
the stairs into my mom's house did not help at all. I did use my scooter
lots though and we "walked" to the market and all around a botanical garden
so that was great. The University of British Columbia Botanical Garden has
a "Physics Garden" which has plants that through history have been used for
medicinal purposes with quotes on what they wer used for. It was a hoot -
for palsy, for rheumatism, for melonchaly etc. Lots of cures for gout but
they mixed most of the herbs and plants with ale and wine so that might have
cured all. Was fun as it was in a maze format with lots of quotes and a
yew hedge.

The first day we had fresh asparagus, new potatoes, new fresh strawberries
and pork tenderloin on the barbecue. My sister came for dinner that night -
she had been working 12 straight days by then - long long days. She is an
administrator of an independant living home (seniors) in Vancouver. One of
their residents was using an electric heating pad - not sitting on it and
took it off her lap and put it on the floor. It exploded into fire. She
took her quilt off the couch and it too burst into flames. She luckily had
presence of mind to push her lifeline button and notify the staff (she was
on the 8th floor - the care aids were on the 1st The sprinkler system went
off in her room but by the time the care aide ran up the 8 flights of stairs
(elevator shut off) the room was full of smoke. She got the lady (93 years
old) out of the room safe - not even any smoke inhalation problems although
she could only locate her through the smoke by voice - couldn't see her at
all. Anyhow bottom line - no one hurt but Jeri has to relocate 9 seniors.
Luckily they had a couple of suites open, a couple more leaving this week.
Families to console and assure that all is okay. The woman's suite was
totally destroyed and will need to be redone completely. No other suites
have damage from the actual fire although some smoke damage in one other
unit but the water damage is substantial. 9 units and 2 offices as the
water went down through the walls to the first floor. The restoration crew
is incredible but as you can imagine there are fans everywhere and everyone
is upset. Yesterday was Jeri's 13th day in a row and most everyone is
grateful for all she and her staff have done but of course now scared, don't
want to move but don't want the fans on (they are noisy), phones to
relocate, clothing etc to relocate. Not everyone had tenants insurance
either. I had a spare twin quilt I had made and gave it to the lady who was
burnt out - must say it was a beautiful quilt and figured it would be a
comfort. Then mom and I went to a fabric store - needed more fabric like a
hole in the head but really really did!

The second day was the day we went to the nurseries - oops. One rose and
many many different alpine plants including one called Fuzzy Wuzzy -
therapy! Then the walk to Granville market to pick up more strawberries,
potatoes etc. Went to the dollar type store I love called Wonderbucks and
picked up some paper napkins - fancy ones - and some lovely metal trellis's.
Mom and I barbecued lamb racks that night.

Next more nurseries - another rose, more succulents and hen and chicks.
Some I didn't have - yes there are a couple still left. Jeri again came for
dinner and we barbecued - can you tell we ate well all week. Saturday was
the botanical garden, lunch out, read books at home and then to Jeri's for
dinner - she barbecued that night.

So was relaxing. Came home though in a flare and to lots of phone calls
from drug companies and infusion clinic. Infusion is scheduled for July 14
and 15 and then the 28th and 29th. So only a couple of weeks to wait thank
goodness.

Picking up my husband tomorrow.

So glad you are feeling more positive - we all need a break Donna! My
sanity hangs by a thread sometimes - literally when I am quilting while in
pain - but when it happens I just have to take a break.

Wanted to ask if you have an mp3 player - I have one that I used all the
time before Pat got me my ipod. Now that you are getting a computer I would
be happy to send it to you if you think you could use it. I love it!
Wouldn't be without it in my infusions - have all my motivational music on
it - you know "You're here for a good time not a long time" by Trooper;
Forever Young by Bob Dylan; and of course Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet.
You know - the kind of things we need to hear during a full day of
infusions. Anyhow just let me know.

Thanks for all the encouragement - I came home ready to take on the infusion
clinics again. At least I know this med works on me - just time to tackle
the downturn now that I have acknowledged it is definitely a downturn.

Hang in there Donna!

Kelly

Wow!!! Sounds like a great time and even better food!!! I'm sitting
here drooling after hearing all of the yummy things you all cooked out
on the bbq and ate! Nothing like lamb done out on the bbq and I love
pork any way it is fixed, and of course the fresh veggies and fruit
during this time of year is just the best!!!

The plant shopping sounds like it was fun and quite fruitful as well.
Glad you had your scooter with you for many of your trips out.

Wow, that situation where your sister works sounds just horrifying. God
bless that 90+ year old woman for having the where with all to summon
help. So many that age wouldn't have been that with it to do so. Still
very scary for all I am sure. I can just imagine. Wish I lived closer
and could donate some items to help out! Sure hope they get all that
they need. Hope too, that your sister gets a little bit of a break.

No, I do not have an mp3 player, although I've heard wonderful things
about them. Love your taste is music though!!! Too funny. I'm always
telling the nurses when they are hanging the stuff to run through the IV
to make sure they mix in a bit of strawberry margarita mix with it.
They always just look at me like I have 9 heads or something!!! I'm
still pinching myself at the fact that these friends are just going to
go out and buy me a computer. Actually I have cried a couple of times
over it all as I just don't know how I get so blessed all the time,
especially for all the complaining I do!

You definitely will be doing your infusions before me this time. We had
mine 3/4 of the way through all the paperwork and approval stuff when
thursday I got notice in the mail that effective 7-1-08 my insurance was
changing. Well shoot! Spent virtually all day friday on the phone
starting over with the whole process for the rituxan as well as the IVIG
infusions as the stuff with the new insurance specifically listed meds
that had to have pre-authorization before they could be infused. Talk
about giving me short notice when my IVIG infusion is only about 3 weeks
away and I have to go through the whole pre-auth procedures again for
that! Yikes!!! I didn't even have my new insurance cards yet with my
new ID numbers. Thankfully after about 6 calls back and forth to the
new insurance company and explaining my situation, they did give me my
ID numbers as well as a number for the doctors offices to call and
hopefully expedite the pre-auth stuff for the IVIG and for the rituxan.
I really want to get the rituxan going soon!!! Never a dull moment in
medical cookoo land!!! lololol Thank goodness I had already have a
couple of days to myself or friday might have been more stress than I
could have dealt with at the time.

I'm sorry you're flaring so badly, but am glad you were able to do the
trip and just get away for that short period of time!!!

You are always in my prayers Kelly and I pray that the infusions go bit
smoother for you this round!!! No UTI's, shorter side effect period,
and a return to better control of the RA!!!

God bless you my friend and you hang in there too! Thanks for always
being so uplifting and inspirational!!!

Hugs,

They will go smooth for both of us because we are pros by now. I know the
side effects and watch those nurses like a hawk. I will have a new infusion
nurse as mine is going on maternity leave but I know how to train her now.

NO UTI's. Definitely. NO closed ports for you - no multiple pokes. And
definitely shorter side effects for both of us! I leave for Seattle for our
quilting lady's trip the week after my infusion (of course this trip was
booked and planned for way in advance!). I have to be well. We are
travelling by Clipper (a passenger only catermaran - spelled wrong) and a
scooter is waiting for me at the hotel right across from the quilt show so
will be easy peasy. My girl friend says I can point at fabric to buy and
she will muscle in with my credit card and buy it for me - yeah right like
there will be any room on my credit card after the infusion but what the
heck. There are 8 of us going so no one will notice if I scoot back to the
hotel for naps and chocolate (well and maybe a glass of wine a day).

I will send you the mp3 sometime in the next week or so when I find all the
cords and software and when you get your computer you can use it (actually
if you don't mind my mixture you can use the music on it for now without the
computer.) Seems a shame for it to sit here and it is just the cat's meow
for infusions and sleepness nights.

My wrists are screaming so off to have a hot bath and ice pack the wrists -
doesn't make sense does it?? Ice the knees after a hot bath to relax them.
Duh but it works for me - gets the inflammation down a tiny bit. Also
wearing my splints day and night right now - have to find my extras so I can
wash these - thank goodness they are black.

Take care and we will keep each other going. I am investing in Diane's book
to read next infusion - can't wait for the darn library. Thank goodness you
are writing quickly and almost finished the other one for editing Diane!
And please don't ever doubt your writing - we will always tell you if you
are slipping!

Kelly and Donna,

Glad you had fun on your trip Kelly. That was such a cool thing you did for
that poor woman with the quilt and also what you are doing for Donna. I am
proud to know you as my sister in arthritis. ;-)

Sounds like you got alot of stuff for your garden and had lots of good food
too. I am glad.

I hope you didn't hurt yourself when you picked hubby up. ;-0

I hope all goes well for you.

Donna,

of course you would get blessed like you bless so many others. I feel
honored to know you too and be a sister in arthritis with you. There are so
many good caring people here.

I pray for the both of you that the infusions go well and smoother than they
have been. I feel since you are both so sweet and caring that you should be
able to get those infusions without trouble and reactions. I will be praying
that for you both.

What a hectic time! The food sounds delicious. I love new potatoes
and always put too much butter (oleo!) on them. Sounds like a
wonderful time for you, but not so good for the seniors.

It sounds like a wonderful trip, Kelly! I'm not surprised you came home in a
flare after all that. And such lovely food - our asparagus season just
ended, after we enjoyed it in many ways. Strawberries are just starting,
thanks to many cool nights. New potatoes are months away. Can't even buy
lamb here unless you get it live at the county fair. but how can you beat
good food, good plants and good visits. And regrettable though it is, you
got to provide Jeri with a cahnge of pace from her heavy load at work and
were at the right place at the right time to help out a resident.

those poor nurses! How sad to go through live not getting a joke like that!

Are we ever going to convince you that the things others do for you are a
reflection of how blessed they feel to have you in their lives? For someone
who has so many medical issues, you really don't complain much at all and you
are always concerned about other folks and do what you can to be a bright
spot in others' lives. And honey, what goes around really does come around!

Wow. It's amazing how incompetently these things can be handled! It's good
you managed to negotiate the red tape and get the process underway. At the
least, they should have had a provision for certain pre-approvals to
transfer. But "shoulds" rarely seem to matter with health insurance and they
don't care if someone dies while waiting to re-pre-approve a med.
