Default OTP: pond maintenance?

okay, i know this is waaaaay OTP, but i think there were a few people
here who knew about landscape ponds/fountains. we have a lovely little
fountain/stream/pond in our front yard that was here when we moved in
two years ago. our old landscape guy took care of the rare problems we
had with it, but our new landscape guy doesn't know about ponds. the
rocks are covered with algae all of a sudden and i'm wondering what i
should use that won't hurt the three little fish that live in the pond
(although i haven't seen them in a looong time and wonder if they're
still there. =:-0 )

anybody know what i should use?

thanks!

KJ is our resident expert Diane. I have a small pond drained at the moment
that I never keep fish in. I don't really have problems with algae but
think it is because of the plants I have in it and the size. Not an expert
I am afraid.

We need KJ.

I asked my son (the aggie) about your problem. He said that you
needed to locate the source of your contamination. It is either the
source of water (doubtful) or animal. If you remove the source, the
algae will go away. Got any dogs or cats that might use the pond?

Just my .0002,

Vickie B.

thanks vickie, but no animals near the pond. i was reading online last
night and one place said the algae is normal and good and will go away
on its own. i have some doubts. i'm going to the landscape store today
and see if i can talk to an expert.

What other sorts of critters do you have in the area? In my little
suburban lot, I've seen foxes, wild turkey, rabbits, squirrels,
chipmunks, skunks, and a variety of birds.

we've got lots of everything, alice, critter wise, but i don't think
that's it. i talked to a pond guy at the nursery today and he's going
to come take a look at it and tell me what should be done. a couple
of you also sent me KJ's email addie, so i may email her as well.

thanks so much!

I don't know anything about ponds really, but I have been told by a couple
of pond owners...That they had Coi? you know Fish...and that they wondered
why they never had any baby ones....Hmmmm Well in the spring when they would
clean all the junk out of the bottom of the pond...they were destroying the
eggs...So I told my other friend also a pond/fish owner....And she didn't
clean the bottom of hers...So I am waiting to see if She gets any baby
fish...
Or...do they eat their young like a guppie will...I don't know...again I am
clueless...
AND I so want a pond...but too many little grandchildren running around
right now...And so I think I will keep them and give up on my fish
dreams...LOL

the only problem i have with the grandchildren and the pond/fountain
are that they throw the rocks from the side of the little stream into
the stream, thereby diverting the water over the sides of the stream
onto the walkway. sigh.

have you tried putting one or two placopotomus (plako-- sp? -- they are
algae eating fish and help to keep things tidy.) in your pond? plako get
along well with koi, goldfish and such.

kate, the pond "came" with three little fishies when we bought the
house. they're hard to see because they hide, but i haven't seen them
in a long time and worry they've disappeared. i don't dare do anything
to the pond without a professional evaluation. a little boy (he's
little and looks about 14) who works at the local nursery is coming
over this evening to evaluate what, if anything, should be done. i'll
keep you posted on the saga.
