Bought one for mother in law who didn't have a doorbell at all and
could not hear a knock well enough. She liked it.

Yes.

Home Depot.

She complained that the doorbell would ring, then no one would be
there by the time she got to the door. I thought, initially, that she
was just very slow getting to the door, but decided to really look at
the situation after she kept unplugging the bell unit, which defeated
the whole purpose behind installing it.
I discovered that when I pushed her doorbell, a woman across the
street kept opening her door. She finally asked if I had seen anyone
at her door because her doorbell was ringing and not a soul at the
door. I had to change the setting on MIL's unit to correct the
problem.
When we continued to have problems with her unplugging the receiver
(ringer), another round of questions revealed that the wall plug right
outside her bedroom door that we were using (so the ringer would wake
her up in case of emergency, etc.) was right where she always plugged
in the vacuum cleaner. She would unplug it, set it on a shelf, then
forget to plug it back in.
One thing which helped "sell" her on the idea of having the doorbell
was the fact that she could select from 26 tunes (or some similar
quantity) for the ringer, which allowed her to have Christmas tunes as
a ringer during that season, etc.
