Substitute "arthritis" for "cancer" and "rheumatologist" for
"oncologist" and "urologist" and you'll see the relation to A.S.A.

The subject of the thread (Sy) visited A.S.A. awhile ago and stated
"Am 59 years of age, 6'2" tall and 215 lbs., in good health and
have the usual aches and pains due to "arthritic changes."......
and didn't mention a thing about his prostate cancer.

Then he became testy over a few of the replies to his posts.
Well, he bounced over to A.S.C.P. and began his tirade again,
which produced the following results.

Subject: Hi de Hi, Sy

Hi Sy

This is addressed to you, but primarily to all those contributors to
this site who I have found contribute their time because they are
caring and informed. I don't want them to stop contributing and caring
because of what you have unjustly thrown at them. People suffer from
being verbally abused - even if the insults are not very high class
-gems like 'jerk', up yours' and easy sarcasm about Nobel Prize
winners.

I don't what any contributor to think -as I know one has done, "why
should I give my time, and thoughts, when all I get is abuse?" For
every abuser there are hundreds of lurkers, as I was, who appreciate
every extra word they can find about a deadly disease affecting them.

I first consulted this newsgroup because, like you, I found from
original research an extraordinary complexity of treatments (as you
write you have done). I had consultant oncology consultants -as you
have - who I regarded as top of the tree and after two years of
treatment know they are. I listen to them and almost always have taken
their advice. Almost. I am not yet taking Casodex -because of this ng
(as I note below).

With this illness, good oncologists will give you a choice. I've had
it. It includes watchful waiting (I couldn't because of the
aggressivity) , radiation (a multiple of kinds), surgery (multiple
kinds), drugs (at least two main kinds). And some new treatments now
arriving.

Multiple treatments. multiple possible side-effects with all of them.
Multiple measurements of risk, multiple tables of probability.
multiple authoritative writings from acknowledged prostate cancer
experts, Sy, some contradicting what the other writes. Did your
consultant perhaps write one of them?

I came to a simple conclusion. (no, don't pick it up Sy, I didn't
write simple-minded). There is no 'treatment'. There are tens. In the
state of present knowledge, it's all a gamble. My throw included
taking into account the following odds - which of the possible
side-effects would I least want?

In a first post I wrote:
My objective: A cancer free prostate, and hopefully cancer free, with
minimal treatment and minimal side effects.

And that's where I've found the ng invaluable. Side-effect is a word.
Pain suffered, that's knowledge. It's anecdotal knowledge? Sure. So,
you'd rather not know >for sure< what happens? How long was it -has it
been; how bad; was it controllable, treatable; what permanent
damage/conditions has it left you with; or maybe -how little have the
side effects actually affected you? And more. That is experience,
Anecdotal experience, which unlike you I don't despise, coming from
people who have been through just about every stage of Pca and
suffered just about every side effect. Some of them are also very well
researched. For me, that's a cause for deeper study, not for abuse.

It affected my Casodex decision. I was advised to take it. I wasn't
sure. My question on this ng led to a fierce argument between two
opinions about whether to take it sooner or later. That argument is
rife throughout the medical world. I respected both arguments - and
could read them against other countless posts actually describing how
its side effects have affected users. I decided on, well, watchful
waiting, you could call it. My consultant just nodded when I told him.
It's our life, our choice, in a world without certainties.

As regards my main treatment I chose to be a guinea pig for a new
procedure. This was not brave, as one or two have suggested. I had a
Gleason count of 9 and am quite an old guy; I researched the
recommended oncologist for the HIFU procedure. He was the tops. I was
referred by my original urologist, who is tops in non-invasive stuff.
So I had not a moment's fear or doubt. And it all seems to be going
very well as my previous posts have indicated. I have been able to
provide this group with details of side effects to date. Not too many
reports around for HIFU for aggressive-cancer patients. I will
continue to do so.

Among those you have insulted is a lady whose husband, you knew, had
just died. I threw away shining armour a long time ago, but Sy you
really must brace to take a good look at yourself.

Here are just a few excerpts from a number of your posts - with a few
comments which arise:

>"(you) REALLY think I should ignore the advice of my very experienced

Urologist Oncologist and other Physicians I've seen and go under the
"care" of the alt.support.cancer.prostate Newgroup?"<

............You're right, disgraceful Sy. Tell us the name/penname
of the simpleton contributor on this newsgroup who has told you to
abandon your medical guys and instead go under the care of this
newsgroup. Who is he/or she, please? Please tell. We can then all
hurl insults at him.

>"all the Board Certified Urologist-Oncologists with 25+ years of

Clinical experience here will fly out of the woodwork to show off
their expertise and their ability to type pollysyllabic verbiage."<

............No. Not good enough. Poor insult by your standards. 30+
years would have been a better guess. But thanks anyway for the info
-I will pay more attention to what this well-rearched group say in the
future. Don't care where they fly in from.

>"certain people come to believe that they are actually medical gurus,

Lasker or Nobel Prize winners and get very defensive when their
"expertise" or point of view is either questioned or challenged."<

.............Board certified, 25+ years and now Nobel etc prize
winners. Even better. But, then, really! >they< get very
defensive??!!* Are you reading here what you've chucked out from
behind your barricades? The Siegfried Line was a sand castle
compared with the immediate violent cannonades you can launch.

>you are an intolerant jerk and busybody,<

...........see comments below on repitition and inadequate level
of insult.

>Very perceptive Einstein<

...........repetitive, inadequate, you forgot the 25+years, Nobel
Peace etc.etc.

>I would like to end with "Up yours". <

..........Thank you Sy. We must all remember that along with "jerk,"
and "busybody." We're building our dictionary of original insults.
Where d'you find these memorable gems?

>"basically humorless busybodies demanding that you "prove" your

rationale to them."<

...........busybodies -another to add to the dictionary of
original thought. But why add 'humorless'? Hang on. I'm scouring
your stuff again. Nope. Can't find it. What did you write to
make us all laugh? Where? When? Dates please. We all want a laugh.

>"I think that one in particular believes himself to be a highly regarded

Prostate Oncologist and has likely booked a flight to Stockholm in
order to be ready to accept his forthcoming Nobel Prize in Medicine."<

.............Oh dear Sy. Not that Nobel Prize again. Do better
next time.

>"What is it about some people who in one breath say something like

"I respect your treatment plan and you are the only one to decide"
and in the next breath feel a need to construct a sinister
"possible" future scenario? " <

...............Eh what? The person who respects you has got a Sinister
Scenario?!* Ah..then h'm.. Ahem (louder). I suppose you may be right
Sir. Keep looking behind you. (Quick! Let's get out of here!)

>"I think your comments are quite simple minded."<

............Mild, good, calming down. Keep taking the pills.

>I don't know your specific case and don't especially care.<

...........You're honest, Sy. All the people taking time to
contribute to this newsgroup do so because they care. It's
nice to know you're one in a millon. You don't.

>"here are a few jerks like yourself making the kind of remarks which

you made."<

.............Look above. You will find a small sample of your kind
of remarks.

What should you call yoursef?

I hope you won't go, Sy, but continue posting. Albeit remembering
the wisdom of Oscar Wilde: 'Some cause happiness wherever they go;
others, whenever they go.'

Hi Mike......that was absolutely wonderful and I agree 200%. However,
if he should decide to leave us and antagonize another news group, I
wouldn't be the least bit upset!! (G)

Contrary to what someone else said, I don't think he is being
vituperative due to fear.....he just likes to be nasty. And I don't
need people like him in my life so he will be killfiled immediately.

Wow, Mike......

Just got in from working at the ranch all week and saw your post -
the Post of All Posts.

One day Sy will get over the shock that he has cancer. Unfortunately,
lashing out at the world, will not stop the spread.

Have a great weekend.

Gourd Dancer

PS, I'll be in Bergen County, NJ next month to sing, wonder if my friend
would like a cup of coffee......

.... Locked my coathanger in the car. Good thing I had a key!
