| | | OTP - Prayers needed My best friend, Debbie, is going through a really hard time. Her rent
was raised so high that she had to move. We thought things were going OK
- she lives in NYC and ended up having to take a share. She just can't
afford her own place anymore. She signed a lease for a room with
bathroom in a condo, and today they told her she can't move in on the
weekend. She has to get out of her apartment that she's in tomorrow, but
she can't move into the new place until Monday. So she now has to put
everything in storage for two days. And she'll have to sleep on the
floor of her new place for two nights.
I know there is supposed to be a reason for everything, but I'll be
darned if I can figure out why this is all happening to her. She hasn't
had an easy life lately and has been out of work for over a year. At
present she is working 3 temps just to sort of make ends meet.
Please say a BIG prayer that things will start going better for her,
that she'll find a really good job, and that her living options will change.
Thanks,
Carole |

goes with the layed off and temp jobs because of Jim going thru it for three
years now. It is not fun.

beautiful house full of marvelous things, etc. and while I worry about a
little pain to go through in January, here is this woman worrying about a
place to live. I'm sure, if she's working three temps, she is also worrying
about food, medication, etc. It really keeps me grateful for what I have.
She will be in our prayers.

DeeTee, I agree with you about being grateful for the home that I have,
the food in the cupboard and the check coming in every month. |

Thanks, SJ. I also know what it's like since I did that when I first
moved out here to Washington. I am praying that she will get a really
good full time job in the new year.

I also went through what she is going through, and I know what you mean,
Ann. I never thought I'd be on disability, but I am so grateful for that
check every month, and the fact that I have a nice affordable apartment
in WA. Little things do mean a lot.
Thanks everyone for the prayers. I just hope everything goes well today
as she has to turn in the keys from her other apartment today. I am
praying that she gets everything moved, and that the storm that is
supposed to hit NYC holds off.

Well, I finally convinced her to go and get food stamps, as she had no
money left over for food. I was sending her what I could, but the food
stamps really help. I'm hoping we can find her a food bank near her new
room. There is a big church near there, so I'm going to contact them and
see if they have one.

| | | Re: OTP - Prayers needed Definitely prayers for Debbie. And your idea about finding a food bank near
her is great. i've learned around here that even our most crochety church
members are willing to help out people they truly believe are *trying* to
make a go of it and are willing to work, but just need help over the rough
spots. (It's hard to convince them to help the folks who are in chronic
situations, regardless of why.)

Can I suggest a gentle reminder to the church folk that we are told to help
"the least of them"
Grandma really drilled that one in when we were growing up. That there was
no one beneath our help.

I sooooooooooooooo agree with you. And my dad's most significant verse in
the Bible talked about "of those to whom much has been given, much will be
expected." (somewhere in Isaiah, I believe, but I'm not getting up to find
it right now.)
The problem is we are currently in an area that has been economically
depressed for decades, ever since the lumber ran out towards the endof the
19th century. Folks are willing to help out with major medical and disaster
expenses, but when it comes to daily stuff, they operate on the theory that
they did whatever they had to and so should the folks asking for help. they
are also suspicious that they are being taken advantage of. We keep trying
to drill home the thought that it's ok to be taken advantage of once in a
while, if it means you are getting aid to those who truly need it. I can't
stand the thought of tightening our restrictions even more and missing folks
who really need help - especially with the number of folks who have several
kids fairly young around here. Gotta feed those kids during the critical
years!
Mke and I also firmly believe in treating everyone with dignity and respect.
At the food pantry, that includes reating folks as much as possble as we want
to be treated in a quality retail setting. These are folks who have so
little control over events in their lives, giving them some dignity and
choice in this setting is vital totheir overall functioning. It's hard to
break folks' thinking that they should just be grateful for our help. That
last attitude misses the entire point! Well, enough preaching for now. You
might have guessed this attitude is a real issue for us here! (and much more
so at one of our churches than at the other).

Hi Nann, We had great success in dealing with taking the day old or more
off their hand and low and behold,,,, they would bring it to the church. We
still have the katrina dropping by for a loaf or two.
