Default OTP: The Viewing

An old man, Mr. Goldstein, was living the last of his life in a nursing
home.

One day he appeared to be very sad and depressed. Nurse Tracy asked if
there was anything wrong.

"Yes, Nurse Tracy," said Mr. Goldstein, "My private part died today, and I
am very sad."

She replied, "Oh, I'm so sorry, Mr. Goldstein, please accept my
condolences."

The following day, Mr. Goldstein was walking down the hall with his private
part hanging out of his pajamas, when he met Nurse Tracy.

"Mr. Goldstein," she said, "You shouldn't be walking down the hall like
that. Please put your private part back inside your pajamas."

"But, Nurse Tracy," replied Mr. Goldstein, "I told you yesterday that my
private part died."

"Yes, you did tell me that, but why is it hanging out of your pajamas?"

"Well," he replied, "today's the viewing."

Chief - I know you think this is funny. But its anti-Semitic.

Goldstein is a Jewish last name. You want someone in a joke to be Jewish -
you name them something like Goldstein.

Chief - Jews don't do viewings. It's considered disrespectful within our
religion. So the joke is designed to make the Jew look either perverted or
stupid.

I didn't even read the name of the guy. Maybe next time I'll change it to
Hernandez or Gomez before posting from another group.

Hmmmm,
So what name or race or ethnic background would be acceptable or appropriate
in any kind of humor?
The name Goldstein didn't make me think Jewish at all until you brought it
up.

I thought about this some more after I posted my response. I suppose the
joke could have worked with no name attached to it. Not sure it would work
for just the term "man", but if it uses "old man" then we are back to square
one again.

Oh Crimeny! How we strain to make ourselves politically/socially/ethnically
correct. Get a life, Adelle, or at least a sense of humor.

Excuse me? Is your life so shallow that you need to demean other people
in order to feel good about yourself?

Did I complain because the joke was about an old man, which I am? Did I
complain about it happening in a nursing home where my wife recently died of
Alzheimer's? Did I bring race/religion into the topic that was labeled OTP?
Did I demean californie_chief by calling his joke antisemitic and insulting?
So who is shallow here Alice, the messenger or those who shoot the
messenger. Step back and take another look. Sorry if you were offended but
I'm sure no more so than those who had to deal with the 'racist' label
thrown at the poster. That's my say.

no, bud. the joke itself brought race/religion into the topic. i didn't
think adelle demeaned chief and didn't throw a racist label at him or tag
him with a racist label. i thought she did a good job of explaining to
chief why the joke was offensive to jews.

A name, 'Goldstein', was the religious point I believe and since Adelle
admitted it was not the custom of Jews to have viewings, perhaps the
conclusion could also be reached that since he was having a viewing that he
was not Jewish despite the name. Straining at a gnat IMHO. But too much has
already been made of this and I will not dwell further on the suggestion
that my life is shallow since you can't know the road that I've traveled.
I'm out of this thread.

adelle

while i understand your point, and indeed the name goldstein is often
thought of as a 'jewish' surname
[appearing in the ashkenazic/eastern european region]

it is actually first found in the early germanic languages [non-jewish]

1. composed of german "Gold" ‘gold’ + "stein" ‘stone’.
2. german: from a medieval personal name, nickname, or occupational name
from middle high german, middle low german golste(i)n ‘gold stone’,
‘precious stone’, (probably chrysolite or topaz, which was used as a
testing stone by alchemists).

where i grew up in the mid-west, we had several german families with
goldstein/golsten in their family tree having nothing to do with any
jewish influence.

not trying to take away from your point, just find such things
interesting...

Laughing at a joke is an immediate reaction. If you have to think about it
too long, it wasn't a successful joke. You have that one shot for people to
make the connections you want them to in a joke. So if you are telling an
ethnic joke, you choose a name that's obvious for its ethnicity, so people
quickly imagine that visual that goes with the joke.

Don't know if PBS has it out on videotape, but there was a three part series
called "The College of Comedy" where a group of stand up comedians sat
around and talked about the process of comedy, comedy writing, and
performance. What's funny, what isn't, how to say something in a way that
makes it funny, etc. That's where I get my comment about ethnic names. And
it was a really funny series. If you find it in the rental store, watch it
sometime. Each one featured different comedians, though I'm pretty sure Alan
King moderated each one.

Appreciated.

And yes, I knew the derivation. Surnames weren't used by Jews until the
gov't of whatever country they were in required it. Many metalsmiths and
jewelers took Goldstein as a last name, much like blacksmith often used the
surname "Smith." My mother's family chose the last name - antmann/amtmann
meaning 'law man.' Yes, they were people who did much work involving law.
