| | | Pain and the ER My chest hurts...it has for two days. But the pain is not low it's high up
and is also in my back. I spent most of today in the ER where they did an
x-ray, a sonogram, and a CT scan with contrast. They also did blood tests.
Nada, nothing, butkiss. Sigh. It hurts when I take a deep breath or cough
and sometimes when I swallow. The ER doc said he didn't know what it was but
it wasn't my heart, my lungs, or my PICC line (which is still perfectly
placed). A little while ago I remembered my lidocaine patches and put one on
front, one on back and one on my shoulder so I'm feeling some better.
Anybody have any guesses as to what's going on? Maybe a muscle pull or a
turned vertebrae? I won't get to the chiropractor until Monday because
they're closed on Thursdays and Friday is chemo again.

DeeTee,
Might want to check with your oncologist, sometimes chemo can cause
problems that cause pain in other parts of the body. Just a thought.
Prayers that you get to feeling much better soon!!!

| | | Re: Pain and the ER DeeTee,
I have had pains in those spots when I have been stressed before. They have
been from tensing muscles for too long and in some cases from too much
bedrest etc. Usually some heat in the neck and shoulder area helps; in some
cases it takes cold, then heat. Because of the surgery and then the chemo
and the tension of all this - well could that be the same thing. Since they
have checked everything else out? Glad they did such a thorough workout.
The fact that the lidocaine patches worked a bit putting them on the
shoulder clicks it to me. Maybe a gentle massage???
Will be sending some healing thoughts. Try some gentle heat, some cream
massaged in and some good music. Think of that special place and go to it in
your mind and see if that relaxes you. The pain might still be there until
the muscles heal a bit if that is what it is but the relaxation should
eventually help. Can't hurt anyhow if they have checked up on everything
else.

| | | Re: Pain and the ER I have had pain like that when I had pacreatitis. Kinda felt like what they
describe a heart attack feels like: pain in chest and stomach, pressure,
hard to draw in a breath, only with back pain, too. Never had another attack
once they took my gallbladder out.
My mom developed pancreatitis several times. They couldn't find the cause.
Turned out it was a sign of her cancer spreading. Please do something my
mom never did - tell your oncologist. It may just be stress. Or a reaction
to having to sit for the chemo. Or it could be just your back choosing to
act up for no good reason. But if all your care providers know about it,
maybe it will be easier to figure it out.
Hope all of it resolves itself soon.
BTW - its "bupkis." It refers to tiny little turds, as in "I worked so hard
and only got bupkis."

| | | Re: Pain and the ER If the ER doc did not contact your oncologist it would be a good idea to
çall his office tomorrow and let them know what's happening. Usually
the oncologist wants to know everything and kind of be in charge of
everything while you are undergoing treatment.

DeeTee, do you have a TENS unit? |

| | | Re: Pain and the ER I know the frustration, DeeTee. I have Fibro and RA, but the real culprit I
believe is Fibro. Sometimes it feels like there is a knife lodged between
my shoulder blades and coming out the front of my chest in the sternum area.
I've been cleared, too, of any major problems. When it happens I take a
muscle relaxer and pain medication, consciously deep-breathe and use a
heating pad until it eases up. Perhaps the adjustment will help - I hope
so, for you! Nanny

does that feel good. I may cash it in for my back and shoulders.

| | | Re: Pain and the ER Dee Tee,
I agree with the others you might mention it to the onocologist (sp).
But my suspision is that when you were having the pic line put in, maybe you
were sitting, laying the wrong way and it flared something in you.
I had that kind of thing happen when they did my uterine biopsy because it
took so long and I was laying flat on my back. I told them that wouldn't
work, but no one believes me. Well the dr did after I tried to move
afterwards. When I came out of the office after getting dressed, he was
ready to send me to the ER. I had tears coming down my cheeks and he never
seen me that way. He was telling his nurse how I am such a good patient and
never complain about anything. Well that wrecked that record. ;-)
So it might be from how you were sitting or laying. My chest rebels with
almost everything these days.

| | | Re: Pain and the ER DeeTee,
When I had my recent back surgery, the following day I had very bad
pains in my left hip area. This was the hip which had been replaced
many years ago. After consultations with the neurology resident,
anesthesiology and pain management, they concluded that it was deep
muscle stress or strain and they used steroid injections to quell the pain.
Not one of them had any idea as to the actual cause. I went into surgery
on my back and I was flipped onto my stomach and strapped down so that I
would not move. The straps were around my upper back and waist area.
I hope they find something to relieve your pain
My oncologist gave me extra Prednisone each time I had my chemo
infusions. Have you discussed this problem with your oncologist?

| | | Re: Pain and the ER DeeTee,
call your oncologist. Susan had a very similar thing at about a month
into chemo. It was transient and was gone within a few weeks but her
oncologist told her that can happen with chemo. She had her PICC line
in her chest slightly below her clavicle so it was very scary when it
happened. But it left and never returned. Could of course also be
structural.

| | | UPDATE Re: Pain and the ER Thank you for all the suggestions. Last night I realized that it was
probably a pinched nerve in my neck. I took one of my lidocaine patches and
put it on the back/neck where I could increase the pain with just a little
pressure. This morning the pain was gone even after I removed the patch. Had
my chemo today and the pain did not return. I'm sure it was postural/fibro
related. Thank God my RD gave me so many refills on the lidocaine patches!!

you have enough to deal with without that too.
I hope it never returns to bother you again.

that's just great! If you are like me, when you're ill and not feeling well,
you are likely to spend too much time in one position, which can really flare
up those fibro muscle problems. With all you're going through, still try to
pay attention to how you are sitting and lying down so you don't make
yourself feel even worse, ok?
