Default Ping Alex

Hello Alex. How are you and Sarah doing? I hope well, and not suffering
from the heat wave that is in many places right now.

I'm trying to reach you through ASA, as I cannot send or receive mail at the
present time. In fact, my husband has spent several frustrating hours the
past few days trying to "fix" the problem, including calling the Server
(Roadrunner) and talking to them for 1/2 hour. Still no service. About 6
months ago, my husband put everything on the Time Warner Cable company plan,
and we've had nothing but trouble since then. I'm about ready to tear out
my hair, but don't want to lose what I already have. :-)

I don't want to impose on you, yet I know how capable and willing you have
been in the past in getting your computer "family" out of sticky
predicaments. I have Outlook Express. Right now my husband has figured out
a way to access my E-mail messages through a Roadrunner link. Only thing is
that I can't receive or send any E-mails.

I'm handicapped in that I don't know much of anything concerning technical
logistics, so it's hard for me to verbalize questions. However, for
starters, my hubby said I could ask you this question: Fact: Roadrunner is
going to stop providing newsgroups, at least that's the information he has.
So, how can I access the 3 newsgroups I'm on when that happens? They are my
support line! They are the reason I'm here.

I hate the mess-up with Cable set-up. Lots of local people are disgusted
and frustrated with Time Warner Cable right now, per the letters to the
Editor of our local newspaper. My husband changed servers to save money and
to avoid high telephone bills, and get away from the dial-up connection.

What server would you recommend? You don't know how much we would
appreciate some guidance and counsel at this point. I'd even pay you
something for your advice or contribute to a charity of your choice. If
lawyers receive payment for their services, why not someone like you? I
think I know what you'll say, but the offer is there nonetheless. If you
have any questions pertaining to our predicament, I'll let my hubby answer
them. Thank you so much, Alex, for any help you can offer! Nanny

It's true, unfortunately. I just checked the RoadRunner page(s) and last
date of use is June 23! I do hope they had planned to notify all their
users before then! I don't use any groups but this one, so guess I'll need
to use Google or hope somebody comes up with a forum related to us. Anybody
out there with any ideas?

It hasn't been to hot here yet. The humidity has been oppressive so even
night time temps in the 60's F are uncomfortable. Other than that and
the usual health problems we are surviving.

Try going to http://www.rr.com/ sign in with your username and password
then click the Web Mail button. Make sure you have your browser set to
accept all cookies from RR. That should partially solve the problem.

To get that working make sure that RR hasn't changed email from port 25
(the default) to a different port.

Then make sure your firewall and antivirus programs aren't blocking
Outlook Express email, also look in your computers Control Panel >
Internet Properties and make sure email isn't set to Restricted.

There are thousands of Usenet servers that charge from $5 a month and
up. Shop around there is a list at:

http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/...providers.html

I use http://www.readfreenews.net/ news.readfreenews.net as my back up
read only server and have used allnews.readfreenews.net to post in the
past.

Comcast bought out RR here and charges $45.95 for internet, 2 gigs of
news groups through GigaNews and a 2 gig website. Three years ago I paid
RR $35.99 for unlimited news groups and could run a web site on my
computer. That is where I had my 20 gig grampahugs web site.

I subscribe to the pay it forward philosophy. My payment is knowing you
and your husband will offer assistance to someone else that needs help.
