Nann,
Just got a wonderful postcard from you! I would love to actually
visit this labyrinth. If you ever get to the San Francisco area,
you'll have to walk the one at Grace Catherdral. Thanks-made my day!

Kelly,
It has been very very precarious. I set here working on getting
suppplies after myanmar and then China, being absolutely clear that i
would not do any field work unless it was my own community. famous
last words....Summit fire was on the other side of the county but then
the bonny doon fire was just over the ridge. Had firefighters camped
out all over my property taking showers, getting some small sleep,
calling home, etc. So then the Indians Fire which is still going on
two weeks later, began. I helped with the evacutations and setting up
shelters

Last week was just insane: we went to the movies in Aptos and saw a
little stream of smoke going in. ON the way out the sky was roiling
with huge surrealistic smoke clouds-it looed more like a volcano. We
got the scoop on where it was and headed for a friend's house and
stayed that afternoon wetting down the house and finally helping them
evactuate. Then we found out that a friend's husband who is 80 was
home by himself in watsonville which was very very close to the
blaze. We had freeway traffic at a standstill and traffic backed up
for miles so we went around through the backroads watching flames and
smoke clouds. It took us 90 minutes to get to him. We loaded him up
and went back to my house through san Jose. then we had dry thunder
storms on Saturday and a ton of new fires. California is burning, the
air quality is horrible, and our firefighters are stretched beyond
breaking and yet go on. We could certainly use the prayers of
everyone although it seems like what we need is a national day of
prayer as we live in a post global waring world. I can't imagine being
in Iowa or even missouri.

I live in the mountains and so far so good but by neighbors and
friends have all been touched by this insane summer of fire. Move has
not happened yet as I do not have a place to go. I am living in a
community where 2 bedroom shacks are renting for 2500.00 and it is
competitive gettng on of those. I am getting a little nervous
wondering if I am too old to be a bag lady.

i swear, M, if you won't go to the disaster, the disaster will come to
you.

i don't mean to make light of the situation, though, that's for sure.
i remember very well the fires from my old california days and how
terrifying it would be to wake up to the orange sky and ash all over
our cars--and we were never in any jeopardy. i don't know how you
manage all of this physically. prayers are coming that the
firefighters are able to get these fires under control and people stay
safe. thanks for all the work you do.

Man and I thought housing prices were crazy in Victoria and Vancouver! Of
course I have now moved to Cowichan Valley and prices are a lot more
reasonable now. Time to move up Melinda - wish you could be up here with
the medical and all (sorry Harvey - know you would disagree). My pharmacist
is also an acupuncturist and chinese herbologist. the area is very open to
most complementary medicine although the mainstream "socialized" medical
plan does not cover this. the extra plans do though in some cases and a lot
of people are covered through work.

I will have to see if our Mars Bombers are going to join in that fight - I
know they have been to a couple of the major California fires and been of
great help. They are located in my birthtown of Port Alberni and are
incredible. I know they are contracted to BC first and then if BC doesn't
need them they can be loaned out.

Thank goodness you got the 80 year old - can't imagine the fear of being in
that situation - for you and him. Thank goodness for friends.

Is there a panic to move M? Can you stay for a short bit where you are??

Thinking of you - thanks for replying as I was worried. Will be thinking of
you and the people around there.

We've been in Northern California since 1971 and I've never seen the
shear number of fires we have going right now.

I don't see how they even decide what and how to fight.

Last week was bad enough. But not worse than would be expected for a
dry August or early September. Only this is June. Then Saturday
there were lightening storms and now there are literally hundreds of
lightening strike fires everywhere across the state.

My prayers are already coming that way and to all that need them. I can not
believe what is happening all over the country. It is something. I have been
praying for over a month about all these issues now. I hope something works
out soon for all involved.

You take care and I feel for you. I hope something works out and soon for

As usual Melinda, you are in the middle of the situation when someone needs
help. Bless your heart; please also try to take care of yourself as much as
possible. Will be praying for all involved in any way.

Also praying for your living situation. There has to be a place for you
available; I'll just pray for you to find it, and soon.

Much love, Gwen

Labyrinths did have the spiritual effect for me thanks to my wonky mind! My
mind's default setting, if you will, analyzes patterns. I relax into walking
a labyrinth and my mind kicks in and has to analyze it. It's ok with me as
my mind truly appreciates a beautifully laid out labyrinth, but it isn't the
sort of spiritual experience I've heard others describe. Our minds are funny
things!

now I really need to make myself finish getting out my post-Paris postcards!

Now you see, M, it's just as well you weren't overseas as you have been
gravely needed in your own community. We've been having bizarre,
all-over-the-place, weather in northern MI and I have to keep reminding
myself to be grateful none of it has been violent. It's bad for growers
though, cherry crop's way off and it's not looking good for warm weather
crops right now.

My prayers are with those in the fire areas as well as all those who have
been caught in tornados and floods. I heard an expert commenting the other
day on how we've had two 500 year floods in 15 years. It doesn't bode well
for Mother Nature's retaliation.

How would you like to move to northeastern Michigan? We cuold really use
your professional skills here and, frankly speaking, your contributions to
the community as well. Housing is dirt cheap here, compared to CA. And you
can tag along with Mike and I when we go to the Lyric Opera in Chicago.....

I am packing as we speak and on the way, Nann! woops I forgot-you
have winter there. I have a better idea-why doesn't Mike find a
church in Arizona or New Mexico or Oregon. Also San francisco would
be good. We do have a great opera and I do have a box (left over from
the days of glory <g> and which I can actually keep by selling many of
my tickets). You'll love the weather and the culture and the music-oh
woops again-I forgot those pesky earthquakes and, oh right, the state
is on fire.

yeah, but winter is only 5 months of the year, with a month of mud season at
the end. And snow shoveling is really good exercise!

I have a better idea-why doesn't Mike find a
> church in Arizona or New Mexico or Oregon. Also San francisco would

We'd love to, but have been finding that a 63 year old priest with 3 years of
experience is not a hot commidity on the job market! There are too many 40
somethings interested in the same jobs. All along we've been trusting God to
lead us where he wants us, but Mike needs 10 years in the pension fund to get
good insurance in retirement and neither of us can do that long in Hillman.
Even Alpena would be much easier for us, though even further from the opera!
Sometimes I wish God would clue us in on the long-term plan a bit more.

It's funny - I answered our most recent call from the Lyric about buying
advance tickets for next season. They do offer some nice options for folks
who travel shorter distances or who are free on traditional weekends and they
talk those up on the phone. Once we explain that Mike as clergy works on
Sunday and what our processes and costs of getting there are, they back off
quickly! (we drive 200 miles Sunday pm, stay overnight, catch the morning
train to Chicago, arrive & check into Loop hotel so we are close to train
station and Opera, wander around in afternoon, go to Opera in evening, stay
overnight, eat lunch with area friends, catch train back to MI, either stay
overnight down-state or if committments force it, drive back that night.
Last year we did it for Dr. Atomic & Die Frau ohne Schatten and it was worth
it both times. Did you see Dr. Atomic out there? Not music we'd just listen
to on the stereo, but the full performance was bloody brilliant. If I'd
lived in Chicago, I would have been tempted to see it again!)

We do have a great opera and I do have a box (left over from

yeah, that known risk of BIG quakes is a problem...... and fires are not kind
to my sinuses. I just closed up the house in desperation here - not that hot
but humidity and pollen are doing me in. Off to the doc this afternoon for
allergy help. OTOH, I do have a friend from 1st time around in college days
in Berkeley and high school friends in.... I forget the town name, out there
by Mt. Diablo SP, as well as ASA folks in the area. But there'd be real
competition for those clergy jobs!

I don't know, Nann. Keep checking those northern California
openings. Episcopalianism is a hot bed of radical thought in
California and most of the churches here are a liberal as you can
find. I think you and Mike would fit in perfectly!
