TV's were not built to filter interference - cheap manufactureres.
The FCC is also to blame for a lot of the problems, assigning uses
that caused interference.
A mobile public safety band was sandwiched between TV channels
4 and 5. Before everything moved to VHF, I could hear dispatch
on 2490kc and hear the cars on the TV.
A co-worker-ham's backyard abutted the Navy's transmitter site.
She often told them everything that had been sent to the fleet.
One of my "summer cruises" was at NavComSta and I had a chance
to visit both the transmitter and receiver sites. Learned that
the original antenna towers were now supports for the longwire
antennas stretched between the towers. A new paint job cost
more than the installation of the towers.
Also had 3 "summer cruises" at NavyMARS. During the last one
in 1973, the Officer-in-Charge received a dozen or more pallets
stacked with ex-LAPD transceivers - 2400kc AM receivers and
73mc FM transmitters. He was disappointed when I told him
that there was no way they could be used by amateurs.
.... Is it OK to use my AM radio after NOON?
