I strongly doubt that they even know the parts of speech, let alone
grammatical correctness, tenses, names of punctuation marks, etc.

It's interesting watching "Millionaire" and seeing the reactions
of younger contestants to questions relating to English and math.

Ditto on "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?"

One jackass this week couldn't divide 36 by 4.

Joe,

I think the same fella that couldn't divide the 36 by 4, also had a
grammar question about naming the adjective in a sentence. He said,
well, an adjective is a word that describes action! Wrong!!! Wow,
was I shocked. That guy had a fairly high GPA, but missed some of the
most basic of questions. I was stunned especially by the simple math
question he couldn't figure out.

I haven't been watching those shows, but I can believe that about not knowing
what an adjective is. t makes sense when adjectives are regularly used in
place of adverbs these days - and frequently by national TV broadcasters.
It's getting so common, we've even quit correcting them most of the time.

That and using apostrophes incorrectly - such as "show's" rather than "shows"
in my first sentence are my pet peeves!
