Thank you so much. I appreciate this beyond words. I just feel that if
we pray enough and remain positive that there is hope. Harold went
back to Vancouver today, but I have not been able to talk to him to
determine what his feelings are. There is still no change, and the
nurse indicated to my cousin that her kidneys will start shutting
down.

Hi Donna,
Yes this is the same sister that lost her son, then had breast cancer
8 months later. She went through chemo and radiation but because her
cancer was advanced, her lungs were damaged and so she is susceptible
to pneumonia. She has one son left, and this is very difficult for
him. Her husband lost a brother earlier this year as well.
Somehow oow she developed an opportunistic infection. My thinkig
though continues to be that she was under-treated for her pneumonia.
She was in hospital for two weeks, then was discharged. During her
whole hospital stay she ony had oral antibiotics. That does not make
sense to me. Even she questioned her doc when she was released if the
doseage was adequate.

Thank-you DeeTee,
I am sad to hear that your hernias were a result of medical error.
Things like that should not happen.
As I was watching Sylvia's nurses I thought about how easy it would be
for mistakes to occur. Even with one-to-one nursing care there is a
potential for human error.

Thanks for your prayers, Donna. The doctor was very negative when we
talked to him on Sunday, and what he said was very hard to hear. I
hope that he is presenting the worst case scenario, and not a
confirmed reality. She has pneumonia once again. I guess because she
is immobile. Darren her son is being an absolute rock. He will not
allow anyone to think negatively about this. He believes she will come
through this. It is denial, but then his positive thinking is
sustaining him through this.
The nurses at St. Paul's are wonderful. They care about the family
members not just the patient. After listening to the doc it was pretty
hard to be optimistic, but the nurse took Darren and Harold aside and
spoke with them.
Sylvia has now been on the ventilator for two weeks.

indicated that yesterday, she started to stabilize, and so they
planned to try today, and were successful. She still has the breathing
tube in but it is connected to oxygen as opposed to the ventilator. We
were told to be cautious, she still has a long way to go and is not
out of the woods yet. But this is a step in the right direction.
We are so excited and so thankful for even this step. The doctor had
said on Sunday that there was a good chance she would never have the
tube removed and never leave ICU.
DId i mention yesterday that i had won a weekend for two getaway at
the Pan Pacific in Vancouver plus a $100 gift certificate? I thought
we could use it when we go see Sylvia as hotels in downtown Vancouver
are so expensive. But maybe i will hold onto this for a bit and the
sisters can have a getaway once Sylvia is better.

Hi Rose,,,,May God give you a time of peace,,,,give you strength to deal
with whatever tomorrow brings. I think you should use your prize at a time
that seems right for you and yours. Some people I have known would feel
guilty for enjoying themselves with all that is going on. I do not agree
with that at all. You would probably be the strongest one there from it if
there was a need with Sylvia and others in your family.
You know that stress is not our friend. :-) 40mg of steroid every
day is not my friend either.... The truth is that I may not have any left by
the time I cut back on it. I am trying to say that I worry about Rose too.
Rest,,, sleep,,, and peace of mind or mind at rest helps us deal with what
life brings us. So much in life is out of our hands and stress and worry
does not help much and we do it anyway. So it goes.

| | | Re: Rose B. --- re: your sister Thanks for your good wishes everyone. They had to put Sylvia back on
the ventilator last night as she was not able to handle it and her
heart was getting too stressed. We were so disappointed at this
setback.
I now have my sinus infection back too
Started back on the clavulen and amoxicillin.

Dear Rose;
Am so sorry to hear of this setback. Sylvia - and you - have been in my
thoughts and prayers. Wishing you both strength.

I am sorry to hear about this setback - still praying for both of you

Thanks Shannon,
It seems like this year is especially tough for many people. I
appreciate your prayers.

meds from some of us. Let me see - need mtx and antibiotics - bag B.
Rose you need a break! What a pain - literally. Sending you healing rays
from down here! Obviously it wasn't Sylvia's time to get off for good but
how wonderful that she made it a short time. Longer time next time -
prayers going out.

Thanks Kelly,
They have scheduled a tracheotomy for tomorrow. I guess the feeling
is that if they keep the ventilator tube in any longer it will damage
her vocal cords.

(((((((((((((((((((((sylvia, rose and family))))))))))))) i've been
following what's been occurring, praying and had hoped sylvia's improvement
would be sustainable and built upon. i've hung back a little, because i
know how these kinds of situations unevenly and uncertainly unfold.
the emotional roller coaster ride these kinds of situations cause must be
so exhausting for you and your family. i cannot overemphasize how
important any opportunities for respite are at this time, for you and your
family, to relieve the unquestionable stress. i worry about you, hon. take
the short time involved to do something special for yourself, rose, like
treat yourself to a pedicure or a facial, if it is not something you already
do for yourself with regularity (i'd suggest a barbershop shave or
barbershop facial for the men in the family). even something that small can
be of enormous stress relief benefit.
my heart goes out to all of you and my prayers continue.
