Default Breast pain advice please.

I dunno how many people are out there in usenet-land who offer medical
advice - or which groups are the most appropriate so I chose this one.

Ok I am Male 38, about 90 Kg, 6ft tall.

I have for a couple of years now had a sharp stabbing pain in my right
breast just below my nipple. It first happened when I was sitting
down, leaning forward to tighten my shoelace, the pain then was severe
sharp pain and lasted after I had straightened up, it lasted in a sort
of "aftershock" for more than 24 hours. I was then very aware of it
maybe happening again and when it did happen again it was more to do
with me expanding my chest (breathing in) It has never hurt as much as
the first time nor lasted as long. Now it only occurs as a ahort
sharp pain which lingers for 10 minutes or so before being forgotten
about or until it happens again.

I went to the doctor, and told him the pain seemed to be coming from a
small lump, however I misrepresented it's location to him, - I said it
was on the right side of the nipple (there was a small lump there too
and it did hurt aswell when pressed.). I also told him the pain could
be from the bottom edge of the nipple where there was also a painful
lump. AT THE TIME it was difficult for me to pinpoint the problem. The
doctor examined me and said it was nothing.

1 year later it still continued to bother me so I told the doctor he
sent me for an ultrasound, I was not paying attention when the
consultant swiped me with the ultra sound it was all over in about 5 -
10 seconds. My concern is that she only looked in the area to the
right of the nipple not the nipple and under the nipple. I only
thought of this after leaving the hospital. The Ultrasound Doctor
asked me if I felt a sharp painful pulling sensation on the inside of
the nipple, I said Yes. She said she had detected no lump and could
not explain why I was getting the painful pulling.

Now It is a further 1 year on and I am getting pain very often in my
nipple, it is ALWAYS associated with me breathing in deeply and my
chest expanding, I get a sharp cutting pain inside my nipple, with a
small sore area - source of the pain being a possible hardened lump on
the lower side of the nipple (i.e. not behind the nipple but below it
in the same way that my feet are below the nipple and my head is above
the nipple - I just don't want any confusion as to where the pain is)
- the lump is very small about 1cm.

Anyone qualified to give me advice on this?

Thank you

Could I just have ripped the nerve behind the nipple, something like
that?

I'm not qualified to give advice on anything medical, but I've been
around here quite a while, and it doesn't sound much like cancer, for
what that's worth.

Whatever, don't be afraid to keep going back to the doctor if it is
getting worse, or even if it is unchanged. If his prescription (eg
"leave it alone and it will go away") hasn't worked then the ball needs
to be knocked back into his court.

You should ask your internist or OB/GYN about this.

The moswt common cause of that kind of pain is costochondritis--an
inflammation at the point where the bone of the rib turns to cartilage.
That is a weak point in the system, just as the point where an iron cord
comes out of the iron is the most common place for the cord to break. If
that is the case, the hard lump should be felt beneath the superficial fat
layer and skin.

Yeah that could be it. Anyway thanks for the replies. I'll go back
to the doc one day. And although he doesn't like it when I say "I
found XYZ on the internet" I'll look up costochronditis and mention
it to him.
