Default Hand-Foot Syndrome

Anyone out there with tips for ameliorating hand-foot syndrome problems
(pain, redness and swelling in hands and feet)? Although other
treatments also cause problem, this is due to oral Xeloda (capecitabine
- 6/500mg/day), other than stopping taking it?

We've just tried cold compresses on feet (bottoms) and staying off of them.

We see onc manana.

My poor wife seems to always get the side effects.

Hi, Steve,

Truth in advertising: I have absolutely no useful advice, never having had
hand-foot syndrome. I hope your oncologist was able to help. If you don't
get much help from the doc, try cross-examining the chemo nurses, or if
there's a local in-person support group, that's another option.

I hadn't seen a reply to your message, didn't want you to think folks were
just ignoring you. It's possible that others don't have any experience with
it, because usually people here respond only if they have some concrete
advice. I hope we can be of more help in future.

Sympathies to you & your wife,

Ann T.

Thank you.
Both chemo nurses and oncologist have been most available helpful.
Other than keeping hands and feet emolliated with cotton gloves and
socks at night, not much else seems available. Onc now says to stop
taking when hand/foot gets bad and resume when better (but not wait
until entirely gone). He reports that tumor has shrunk and she feels
better. I'm most surprised at how fast some of these drugs seem to work,
although their duration is disappointing.

Yeah, I had it, but I didn't reply because there wasn't anything I could do
about it. It was very painful and I basically just had to wait for it to go
away.

Steve,

My wife has been on Zeloda for 18 months. She has had the same issues.
Moderation of the doage helped a lot (1500/day vs 2000). She still wears
gloves at night. Hope this helps.

Mark
