| | | Address for the newsgroup What is the address for the newsgroup? I want Jim to at least have it. He
reads my diabetic support group newsgroup with me, and he needs to be
hearing what you all are saying. I still am answering your replies to me,
but I can see things in your replies he needs to hear from you guys. It
helps on the diabetes group for each spouse to hear what is being said.
I am appreciating all I've read from you guys.
My sincere best to each of you. Replying to you as I am writing.

Not quite sure what it is that you require.
The group *name* is:
alt.support.cancer.prostrate
Maybe I am misunderstanding you.

I know that. But if I send a link for the group, I cannot remember if I
need to preface it with an http:// or not.
We email across the room to each other. LOL Better to send the newsgroup
than individual messages.
Does that make any more sense? Guess I could practice sending to myself.
My Firefox messed up on me last night, and I'm having to work on that. Could not publish my blog, so no more up-to-date.
You all are being a big help to me, and will be to him. He's been having a
bit of depression. Our son came by yesterday, and brought us lunch.
Emotions are running taught. Today is breaking bright!
Please feel free to ask any questions. I don't mind.

Billie, it looks like you're using Microsoft Mail as a newsreader, i.e.
the application that allows you to read newsgroups like this one.
There's a difference between email and (public) newsgroup messages;
Microsoft Mail, obviously, also allows you to mail individual people.
For mail you need the addressee's mail address. For newsgroups you need
to subscribe, as you obviously have done, to the address that Bodie gave
you (leaving out the extra r, even in winter). If you want somebody else
to subscribe as well, give that person the same
alt.support.cancer.prostate and he or she should subscribe to it using a
similar program. No http etc needed. If you're using Firefox instead of
MSIE, you might consider Thunderbird instead of Microsoft Mail.

You know the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.....
well, that is my keyboard. LOL
A little more effort, all I have to do is get him to bring his computer
over this way next time he comes, and I will set it up for him. Having been
medical admin for 49 years, he is used to having others working *in the
office* and two years of retirement has not completely cleared him of having
someone else do or show him how to do things. He's learning, though,
and he's sweet.
So, I'll set him up (his is already set up for asd), and if he wants to
read, he can, if not, okay. Being in the diabetic support group (alt support
diabetic) REALLY helped me, and what I've read so far here has been
informative to me.
I have used Microsoft as my newsreader for so many years, it just feels like
an old shoe (oh, no comment needed , and I have tried others. (Agent for
one) One reason I'm sticking with MS is because one of my diseases plus
some meds have messed with my cognitive skills, and I need something I don't
need to think about. My needs are small, and it fits my purpose.
Thanks a lot.

Hi, Billie.
From what's been said in this thread, I'm guessing that you are
accessing this newsgroup via a web browser, like Firefox. I think
most of us use a newsreader such as Outlook Express or Agent, or
others.
The usenet, and all the groups in it, are not a part of the world wide
web, and, therefore, one does not need to use http, slashes, www, or
any of that to access the groups using a newsreader that goes directly
to the usenet. If you are using a browser, and you want Jim to also
use a browser, here's what I'd suggest.
Copy the url from the address line in your browser (right click on it
and select copy), then send that to Jim in an email. He will probably
just be able to double-click on it and have it come up in his browser
across the room. Then, he can set it as one of his "favorites",
"bookmarks", or whatever your browser calls them, and he'll be off an
running.
I hope this helps and I hope Jim benefits from participating in the
newsgroup directly. If this is not clear, or you need more
information, let me know. Feel free to email, if you wish.

| | | Re: Address for the newsgroup Billie.....phone Southwest Bell (your ISP) and ask them to set you up
for news groups. I happen to use Outlook Express, not MS Outlook. I
read my ng's via OE and a free server.
OR you can read the news groups via Google Groups Archives.
OR you can get a free news server.
It just depends on whether or not SW Bell still carries news groups.
Here in Canada, Bell and Rogers dropped them.
Cheers....Heather (Canada)

| | | Re: Address for the newsgroup You all are the greatest!!! I know you will be a blessing and help to him.
It has been quite some time, but I recall - maybe incorrectly - of sending
someone to a newsgroup via a llink. Yes, of course, if they desire, they
must subscribe, but that is all that would be left for him to do. That
has been so long ago that I am sure to be remembering wrongly.
His computer is already set up for newsgroups. He reads asd, alt support
diabetes, but he has not the first clue how to set up new groups, so I've
told him to drop his computer off with me on this next trip to the kitchen,
that I had something to put on it. I've already told him some things I've
read here. He will be subscribed later this afternoon. *s*
Lest anyone should misunderstand, it is I who is diabetic, not he. He just
reads periodically when it gets interesting.
Thank you all again so very, very much. If you do not mind, I'd like to
hang around here and read until the time comes. My nerves are just a bit
tense. Not so much his surgery, but I'm having to leave our house, and that
is bothering me.
A good day to all of you.

Thanks, Billie. The initials have served me pretty well for 65 years.

Thanks, Burney.
I use Microsoft Mail, which is the new Outlook Express in Vista. I have
used Agent, but prefer to just toggle back and forth in my email program.
At one time when I got so much mail, it was a bother, but I've cut my mail
way back so it doesn't bother any more.
Thank you very much

So, THAT'S what Microsoft Mail is and where it is - and why I was in
the dark about it. I have a laptop that runs Vista; but, I only use
Outlook for email and Agent for usenet. So, I never saw the "new" OE
in Vista.
Thanks for the info!
