Default artificial sphincter

I now have had a Remeex sling fitted but that is a dreadful disaster
and has given me lots of problems. It will be removed and an
artificial sphincter fitted at the same time that the useless sling is
removed.

My surgeon claims that the artificial sphincter will solve my
problems. Has anyone heard of any bad effects after the sphincter has
been fitted?

Lance

Negatives from it are (generally) only temporary. Mine (installed
12/05) hurt for ten days and then practically no pain. After that I
would only feel some discomfort from the weight of the thing in my
gut, but over a period of six months that went away completely. I
can't ride a bicycle anymore, but that's not a big deal since I'm
getting old enuf (59) that one bike accident could have big
consequences, and I love to hike. The only permanent negative is it
will temporarily leak if you sit funny (e.g., sideways), get up from
seated position quickly, or sneeze. Most people still need to wear a
mini pad (1X or 2X/day) since there may be a very small amount of
leakage, necessitated by the need to fit it so it doesn't close down
on the urethra so hard that the urethra becomes damaged. I prefer the
current scenario (as opposed to having a prostate) since I no longer
feel that subtle (and uncomfortable) pressure from BPH. I am very
pleased with my AMS 800. My doc said it will last the rest of my life
(i.e., longer than the conventional wisdom of 10 years or so). I had
it done by Dr. Levine at Rush U in Chicago.

Holy Cow, Tdub! Haven't heard from you in a long while. If I am correct,
you're hovering around your sixth anniversary. How's your cancer been?

I suspect it may help if we knew what your "problems" are.

How was your continence before the sling?

What is its "disaster"?

Will removal of the sling correct the disaster and restore your
pre-sling incontinence, or has irreparable collateral damage been done?

Could that damage preclude the sphincter?

I.P.

Just dandy, thank you, Mr. Kramer. No sign of it after 6 years. I seem
to be getting healthier as I get older (59) but it takes a lot of work/
investigation, and sufficient funds for lab tests, doctor visits, and
better quality food and vitamins. I couldn't have done it without the
"net". I trust you guys will manage the forum OK while I take another
respite . . .

Ha! In one capacity or another, I have been a manager almost my entire
adult life and I have never been involved with anything so unmanageable as
this forum and would not take the job if offered.

But, if you promise to check in every now and then, Tom, I give you your
leave, sir.
