Default artificial urinary sphincter vs. male sling

    Good evening.

Please forgive the cross-posting, but I am looking for as many
perspectives as possible, and while I know a.s.c.p and a.s.i have many
subscribers in common, there are many who are in one and not the
    other.

I underwent a radical RRP at MSKCC in 1997. The up side is my PSA is
still 0. The downside is that I have severe nocturnal incontinence
every night for the last several months. It has become intolerable
both to me and to my wife.

I have tried Kegels, various medications, and multiple urodynamic
tests, with no solution. My urologist recommends either one of the two
alternatives mentioned in the above subject and described on this
    page.

    http://depts.washington.edu/uroweb/p...gical/aus.html

To anyone who has had either of these procedures done, can you please
tell me how long it took to recover? I am 51 and work full-time. I am
wondering how long I should plan to be out of work. If it will be in
the neighborhood of six weeks (as my GP suggested), I will need to
file FMLA papers for the extensive absence. The urological PA I see
would not give me an answer except to direct me to ask the surgeon
when I see him on the 16th.

Also, any general comments about the pros and cons of the two
    alternatives would be appreciated.

The last three times I have been to my uro, I have seen a P.A. The
doctor himself has been at surgery. I do expect to see him on June
16th when I have a cystoscopy scheduled, and I will be able to talk
with him then. However, I would like to have as much info going into
    that discussion as possible.

    Thanks.

If only nocturnal, I think I would go with a nightly diaper before
undergoing any other medical procedures. But, that's just me.

I do not suffer from your particular ailment, but I sympathize with your and
hope for the best for you and your wife.

I too had an RRP in 1997 and have suffered incontinence since. I had
an artificial urinary sphincter implanted in 2000. I was back at work
two weeks after the surgery and it was activated 6 weeks after
implantation. It has given me my life back. If you want more
    details, please email me.

==> Glad to meet you, Joe. Happy to hear about the sphincter, but more
happy about the 1997 surgery and still standing upright.

I had an Advance Sling in March 09, and was back to work two days later.
To tell you the truth, it probably would have been better if I had taken
off a few more days, but no way can I see six weeks being necessary.

Holy Cow! I don't think we've heard from you since your RRP! Welcome back!
