Blood Clot In Urine

I'm on the catheter, 6th day since operation. Have been noticing blood clots
in urine. Instructions say to call surgeon if I get "large" blood clots.
Yesterday's 2 were arguable about "large". Today's was maybe 1/16" or so in
diameter, although that might be maginified by the curvature of the plastic
tubing, and the length of the diameter of a quarter.

Called, left message, it's Memorial day. Expect reply tomorrow.

Anyone have any experience with this - what might be going on? Too much
sitting? Dunno how that would correlate, but its the only thing I can think of
that I might not be doing 100% right. I guess I'll go for a walk now - its 3
PM and I haven't gotten that in yet. I've got an acre, I guess I could get
around that for a walk.

Happened to me as well---even a couple of weeks into the
catheter---especially after activity. The uro was not concerned. Mine were
varying sizes---sometimes even a bit larger than yours. Eventually cleared
up.

Hi Claude,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm only a "little" scared - about the worst thing I
think could happen would be a clog of the catheter, but none of 'em have been
that large. This latest one turned out to be a bit smaller than I described
because the clear plastic tubing was magnifying it. When I got it into the
collection bag, it was even smaller, although longer - I found out that it was
folded on itself.

I think I'll quit worrying for now... <G>

I'm at 12 days after surgery. My instructions were to not be
concerned about any clots under one inch long. Probably my biggest
has been 3/8". Most much smaller. I'm still getting some at this
point. I have had what the doctor is telling me are bladder spasms,
which are forcing urine around the catheter and out. And I believe a
clot was pushed out along the outside of the catheter during the first
spasm. That did NOT feel good.

I might have given notice to a half-inch clot, but a millimeter? Heck,
I've passed kidney stones bigger than that -- at the airport -- just
before boarding a flight.

By my 6th day, I was briskly walking miles, often outpacing staff and
visitors in hospital corridors, after having not only my prostate but
half my colon and dozens of lymph nodes removed through an open pit
mine. Maybe that acre should be a block or three ... if you feel up to
it ... a few times a day. OTOH, I was pushing a catheter tower on tile
floors, not wearing a bag on my leg while trekking cross-country. YMMV.

Thanks, Dwight. No, I imagine a clot travelling on the outside of the
catheter would not be comfortable. I guess I'm still having a muck better time
of it than some.

The clot, omce I got it down in the collection bag, _was_ over an inch long but
with a tiny whispy tail. Dunno what's going on...

We have no experience with this stuff, and no one close by who does.
It's only natural to hyper-focus on this stuff and wonder what the
hell is going on. I called the hospital at 2:30 in the morning after
I got that first bladder spasm. They asked "Is this urgent?" I said
"I don't really know."

They seemed to understand, and put me through to the on-call doctor.

red come out of me through the catheter. And it almost looks like it
could be a ring or loop.

Open pit mine... I like that. I was only in the hospital 2 days, tho, a visit

I feel that I don't have any after-effects of the anesthetic, yet I have a
pretty good case of CRS (can't remember squat) lately. I keep having to go
back to the handout they gave at the hospital, and it says to walk 3 times
daily. It doesn't say how far, tho. I'm a bit short on the number of walks
today - the previous days have been walking to the theater from the car, back
again, car into house, going out to get the paper, etc. Today's the 1st day I
actually walked around the property. Will do better tomorrow. I'm not overly
fat or anything, but walking just to be walking, without a destination, is not
a favorite activity. And, there's nothing around here within a reasonable
distance to serve as a reasonable destination.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to work in a session with my camera and tripod, and
see how close-up pictures I can get of the top of my radio tower where my two
meter ham antenna is. It is not working well. There's almost certainly a poor
connection at the bottom of this, but where is it? Maybe I can see it. Anyway,
I can get at it in July, when I'll feel ok about the physical effort of tilting
the tower over. It is an eat-your-Wheaties endeavor, with a socket wrench and
a several-foot-long extension on its handle to apply around 110 ft-lbs of
torque for many, many turns of a 6' long screw to lay the tower over. And, when
the tower is about 19 feet off the ground, I have to climb my 16' step ladder
and loosen some nuts to swivel the low band beam horizontal. Fairly dangerous,
but the easy cure is a $750 item that swivels the antenna automatically. Nope,
not any time soon. But maybe I can figure out the smaller antenna on top -
maybe one of the radio club members will know how to get hold of a bucket truck
and I won't have to lay it over at all, if I can only find what's wrong in the
1st place, beforehand. Who knows, I might even see a burned spot where maybe
it was destroyed by lightning while I wasn't looking.

Well, nuts... that's not good news. Not sure what we're doing wrong here, am
increasing my walking starting tomorrow tho. Sitting on one of those "invalid
rings" I got at the pharmacy, and that's about all I can think of to do about
it.

Have been wearing pants the last few hours, so if I passed a clot, I don't know
about it...

I get along with the gym a lot better - I rather like the atmosphere. If my
instractions didn't say I shouldn't drive until the catheter is removed, I'd
probably go to the gym and use the treadmill (and talk to people, listen to the
music, watch other people work out, etc. etc.)

I spent most of my life thinking the same thing, but when I was dx'd and
told that I would have major surgery, I immediately started going to the
healthplex and walking the treadmill. Soon worked up to two miles in 34
minutes (arbitrary goal). The last week before my surgery was spent on a
cruise and I was up on the bow walking on a treadmill every morning.

I went into the hospital on DEC 15 and got out DEC 23 (complications).
Bought a small bag for walking and was back on the treadmill on the 26th.
By Spring I grew tired of the treadmill and went to a ½-mile track in a
small park. Six times around that bored me as much as the treadmill.

I now drive to four different parks with longer tracks and/or hiking trails.
The shortest of these is 2½ miles, but with two Grade 3 hills and beautiful
scenery. The most I ever do is 5 miles, but usually only at charity walks.
I once walked 3-5 miles a day, 3-5 times a week, but I have since settled
into a routine of 2.5 to 3.4 miles a day, 3 to 5 times a week.

But, I am not walking just to be walking. I'm walking to beat the effects
of cancer, to beat the effects of treatment, and maybe to beat the timeline
of cancer.

Got the catheter out this morning. Reported it to the very lovely and
sweet woman who removed my catheter. She said to talk to my surgeon's
nurse. I think I'd like to get another catheter in so I can go see
her again.

Ohhhh... catheter gone... Sweet! Hopefully the clotting will not be found to
be a large problem.

I got a call back from my surgeon's nurse this morning and she listened to me
describe it and asked about my urine color and number of clots. I've only had
3 "big" ones, 2 Sunday and 1 yesterday. She said not to worry. I guess I
won't worry.

Was the catheter removal painful?

I've found that living with the catheter is not nearly as hard as I had
suspected it was. Worst thing is that I could use a little more tubing for the
night bag. I have some more - may splice it in there tonight. Alternative is
to not use the bag and let the catheter drain into a diaper since I have quite
a significant stockpile of those. I could at least roll over then, and sleep
on my right side as well as my left side. But I've occasionally reached the
end of the stretch on the tubing, then it pops out of its socket and leaks on
my shorts and spotted the bed this morning. Nuts.

Got the catheter out this morning. Reported it to the very lovely and
sweet woman who removed my catheter. She said to talk to my surgeon's
nurse. I think I'd like to get another catheter in so I can go see
her again.

I've had it removed two different ways: an extremely quick yank and a
prompt-but-not-rushed pull/slither. The former stung a great deal; the
latter was merely noticeable, not the least bit painful. When I removed
the third and last one myself, *guess which way I did it*.

who can be grateful for the nice, easy removal.

While recovering from my RP six years ago, my roommate was a man in his late
70's. His story put my teeth on edge when I heard it. Also made me very
aware of what the nurse was doing when she removed my catheter.

This was a prolonged stay for him. He came in for surgical treatment of
benign prostate enlargement. A catheter was inserted after the procedure.
On the day of removal a nurse came in, trailed by a bevy of students. She
was going to instruct them on proper removal of the catheter. Despite all
the instruction, she neglected to deflate completely the anchor inside the
bladder before giving it that nice decisive yank. Imagine the agony.
Needless to say, he was in for a prolonged stay to repair the damages.

I made sure to relate that incident to the nurse right before she removed
mine.

No, not necessary. Just make sure that the *x-no-archive: yes* is at
the very top and then post as you usually do. Bottom or interspersed,
etc. It should work because I should imagine the code just tells Google
not to archive the post. I am testing that with this post and leaving

No, not necessary. Just make sure that the *x-no-archive: yes* is at
the very top and then post as you usually do. Bottom or interspersed,

Oops, sorry about that. The *Google Gods* got me. I tried to send it
via Motzarella and it didn't seem to go, so switched to aioe.org and
