Blood in urine prior to catheter removal (after radical prostatectomy)

I would really appreciate some feedback from members of this group who
have undergone a radical prostatectomy. I am interested in the amount
of blood in their urine in the weeks following surgery and prior to
the removal of the catheter.

HISTORY: My Dad underwent radical prostatectomy two weeks ago. He
still has the catheter and urine bag but is scheduled to have the
catheter removed in two days. His urine contained some blood during
the four days he was in the hospital after the surgery but gradually
cleared out as expected. His urine was clear for about five days but
on day 10 there was a marked increase in blood. The amount of blood
has slowly decreased again but the urine is not clear yet (day 15). He
also has a few drops of blood that come out of the tip where the
catheter enters the urethra.

QUESTION: Is the urine typically clear when the catheter is removed?
or can there still be a bit of blood? I would appreciate hearing about
the experience of other members of this group.

When I had my RP in 2002, I was also concerned about the continual
reappearance of blood in the urine, especially after any kind of activity.
My uro told me not to worry as long as it doesnt increase. I think I had
some blood in the urine until the time the catheter came out. Then no more.
Remember, there is a "balloon" in the bladder that holds the catheter in,
and if there is irritation, and if the person tends to be a bleeder as I
was, it's easy for more blood to appear. I wouldnt worry. But as always,
if you do, ask your uro.

What's happenin' Cap'n. I just had a RLRP on 6/12. Within 24 hours my
urine was straw colored. Upon release, I'd do my daily three mile walk
and see blood in my urine that would make it appear like a White
Zinfandel. 5 days later my bowels wouldn't start and my abdominal pain
was so intense I rode the ambulance back to the ER. After that the
blood was pronounced in my urine. A few days later it cleared a bit
and the Dr. removed the cath. It's been a couple of days now and I'm
pretty blood free but still see some now and again. Don't know what to
tell you other than some bleed more than others and have your Uro
check Dad out. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. We have an appointment tomorrow morning. I want
to be as well-informed as possible before the appointment, specially
since this is only my "first" radical prostatectomy ;-) ;-) ;-) I
wanted to feel the "pulse" in this group to see how common/uncommon it
is for continued bleeding. On a good night my Dad's urine looks like
tea... on a bad night it looks like a "real" Zinfandel (not a White
Zin like our friend "P" above). Thanks for all postings so far! Any
further advice welcome!

Blood in the catheter is not unusual, nor is an increase in blood
after relative clearing.
The catheter itself is irritating and any motion or activity can cause
minor bleeding from the urethral anastamosis or the bladder itself.
It is amazing how little blood it takes to turn urine a shocking
color. Not to worry, this is part of the normal process and should
gradually clear over time. The time to worry is if clots are visible
and result in obstruction of the catheter or the bladder outlet...that
may call for reinsertion of the catheter or vigorous flushing to clear
the clots.

After my RRP in July of 05, I had some blood in the bag but it went
away. Near the end of the 3 weeks I had it, it returned. THe doctor
and nurse both said not to worry, that it was normal. After the cath
came out I closed up completely within 24 hours. I had to be
catherized and had to self cath for a few days. The doctor scoped the
urethra/bladder and said things hadn't healed and put the Foley back
in for 2 weeks. After it came out I was almost closed up and had
trouble pee-ing for several months. THe doctor called it a 'bladder
neck obstruction' or stricture.

The situation finally improved about 7 months post-surgery. I found
then (and still) that I can't pee hardly at all standing up or sitting
all the way down. I can empty my bladder almost completely in a
crouching position over the toilet and with some contraction of the
bladder/abdominal muscles. As long as my knees hold out and I'm not
leaking I'm not wanting to try to change anything else. I was 48 at
the time of surgery with a PSA of 4.6 (Gleason 3+3), all signs are the
cancer's all gone and I can rise to the proper occasions, so I've got
no real complaints.
