Frans, please avoid generalizations. While Kramer appears to be the
prototype of "the ugly American" (i.e. 358 lbs, IQ < 80, self-centered,
uneducated, liabilities > 3 * assets), most Americans are actually very
nice. More to the point, they have great medical schools, though Kramer
has never heard of most of them as he recently pointed out. |

Well safire, I was just thinking that I had read a number of posts
from you where you hadn't actually insulted anyone. I thought,
"Safire is a reformed man". And now you've spoiled it all.
But it's not too late to climb out of the hole. Think about
how fine it would be to join that group of "most Americans [who]

Frans (Douwe) has been around these parts and alt.support.cancer since 2005.
I thought you were keeping track of patients?
Here's his first post (below). I think we should be celebrating his survival.

Hi,
With a PMS of 475 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, last February.
Tests and scans indicated it went to my skelet, and through my backspine
and pelvis, bladder, stomach and lungues. No more hope. All the
treatment I have is a Zoladex injection every three months. The next one
on August 15.
All we like to know know is the life time expectancy.
I know, nobody can tell. But maybe, maybe there are readers here with
some friend of a friend, who... Where is it going to hurt (this moment
only a minor pain in both hips and knees, while walking down the 7
stairs of this apartment) most, what can we (and I) expect.
Who dares?

Howie,
No need to go away. Frans doesn't represent everyone in this group. I
answered your question within 25 minutes of your posting, and I didn't
try to insult you in the process. You've been around here, off and on,
for a long time. Surely you've seem some of the "vitriol" that sometimes
comes our way. And, by the way, your question was much closeer to
"topic" than a lot of the postings we see here.

The tv news said farrah had colon cancer. She travelled to Germany
for treatment. She was ultimately pronounced cancer free. Then it
came back in the rectum. I wonder if surgery caused it to spread.
I'm a veterinarian. Recently I removed the anal glands in a dog. One
gland had a nodule inside. I sent it for biopsy. The result was
cancer but contained within the gland. The client brought the dog in
today for suture removal. There's now a golf-ball sized tumor where
the anal gland used to be. People in this group warn about prostate
biopsies speading cancer. Perhaps she had multiple biopsies before
the tumors were removed. |

I don't usually respond directly to someone on an open forum as if it's
private correspondence.
But:
Howie, sometimes the flamers (flaming assholes) on this group do try
one's patience, but if one permits them to drive one away, they have won.
If you do decide to move on, please contact me offline for information

Many people get all types of cancers.....
Cancer can be discussed
I was in a Cancer Resource Center "Help" group for men and women with
cancer.........
They had breast cancer, blood cancer, brain cancer, and I had prostate
cancer. It was quite a learning curve to hear their similiar stories and
discuss the similiar treatments.....
Yes, I lost some wonderful friends too.
I do not think it is a bad thing to ask about cancer questions of other
types of cancers on a Prostate Specific Cancer Group.
Especially when they invlove those who one or many may have liked or
remembered as movie stars or sports or whomever.....folks.....

There have been studies of "needle tracking" in prostate biopsies
which have shown that there is some evidence for it, but the
percentages of patients who experience it are very small, and it
is not clear if even a single one of hundreds of prostates that
were studied had any needle tracking of tumor cells that extended
outside the prostate.
I suppose that it is possible that the surgery you performed
caused the cancer to spread. However we know that cancer spreads
even without surgery. I doubt if there's any way to determine
the cause of the dog's new tumor.

Howie, if you're getting something you DO want from this group, I
suggest you take that to the bank and just throw the crap (and/or
crappers) down the drain. You can ignore their crap, or
block/PLONK/killfile it altogether so you never have to see it at all.
It's up to each of us to determine how much crap we're willing to see to
make sure we miss little of importance. Some of the people I've PLONKed
are 99% vitriol, so I'm missing nothing of use there; they were easy
choices. Some of my PLONKees are only 50% vitriol, so it took me longer
to decide their valid points were not worth seeing their crap.
And, of course, "crap" is in the eye of the beholder. Would you believe
that some people have actually PLONKed *ME*? Oh, the sheer horror of it!
But it should be YOU, and I, and each one of us -- not the crappers,
however we define them -- who determines whether we stay or go.

They've always said anal cancer; Sounds like you're describing Adenocarcinomas http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/co..._cancer_47.asp
Adenocarcinomas: A small number of anal cancers are known as adenocarcinomas, which
develop in glands located under the anal mucosa that release their secretions into
the anal canal. They can also start in apocrine glands (a type of sweat gland of
the perianal skin). Most often they arise from the rectum and are treated as rectal
carcinomas. "
(that article talks about other types and warts that can become cancerous)
Sounds like she did everthing possible to avoid a colostomy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrah_Fawcett
What happens please to an animal if their anal glands are removed?
Do they defecate normally? I suppose anesthetic is required?
Thanks for any insight.

Another trait of the ugly american: arrogance. Kramer has never been to
a foreign country except Vietnam. He killed innocent people there but
now, arrogantly, claims the same honours as the soldiers that landed in
Normandy. The coward doesn't know any other language than the Cleveland
dialect of american English. He makes a big fuss about a small typo made
by someone writing in a language that isn't his own native language, for
the benefit of other group members. 358 pounds, 161 kilograms of
arrogance. Not enough character to end his fat addiction, but what a big
mouth... |

The anal glands are within the anal sphincter. With every bowel
movement the pressure of the stool passing through causes some of the
gland secretion to be released. After years scar tissue can develop
in the duct and the gland can't empty naturally. Or the dog develops
recurring gland infections. Removing the glands is a common vet
procedure. It requires anestheria of course. The skin is incised,
the glands are dissected free of the anus, the duct is tied off and
the skin is sutured. Some surgeons can remove both glands without
problem. I did that once and the dog ended up crapping on the couch
for a week, til the nerves regenerated. And I ended up in court
fighting the client's suit over a new couch. Now I remove one gland
then the other three weeks later. Since this one case, I'm warning
clients and have found many are willing to have the glands removed
phrophylactically. ($Ka-ching!$) This case, I found the nodule in
one gland and told the owner to "wait and see". Sound familiar? A
week later they were back and by then the nodule had grown from 3mm
diameter to 3cm diameter. If I'd taken it out at 3mm....

So can I assume the guy realized it was a brain-fart typing mistake
and was making a joke, or is he one of those guys that has to respond
to every language error? Years ago I was like that, responding
whenever I saw 'irregardless' when the poster meant irrespective' or
'allot' when he meant 'a lot'. Luckily I learned to stop doing that
before getting a punch in the nose. Catching mistakes doesn't make me
smarter than the other guy. Maybe ignoring them does. :-)

Now can we get past that?

==> No, Kevin, I generally do not reply to language errors - I make too
many myself. I might, for the humor of it, respond to a Freudian Slip or
some other humorous turnabout with a misspelled word, but not to insult a
man's linguistic or typing skills.
The joke here - and it's not as funny when it has to be explained - was that
he insulted the intelligence of Americans and then misspelled "brains". I
had three choices; no response, respond directly to the bigotry of the
statement, or make a joke of it. I chose the latter and considering the
maturity of the insulter, probably should have chosen the former. |

It wasn't a joke at all.

A typo is a minor error (in particular when in another language than the
poster's native language) compared to Krammer's logical error: referring
to "the former" when there are two alternatives to "the latter".
"Oho!' said the pot to the kettle;
"You are dirty and ugly and black!
Sure no one would think you were metal,
Except when you're given a crack."
"Not so! not so! kettle said to the pot;
" 'Tis your own dirty image you see;
For I am so clean -without blemish or blot-
That your blackness is mirrored in me"
Krammer is a pot.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize cancer in dogs could be that aggressive.
Looks like Fawcett was diagnosed around Sept/Oct 06 and in her liver summer 07
She died appropximately the same timeline as others, I know of (with mets to liver) from rectum or colon.
So in my view, she gained nothing by going to Germany.
I've researched that "clinic" before, in detail. Nothing special that can't be done in the US or elsewhere.
Thanks again for your time and information.
