| | | Flomax side effect???? Hubby is having a problem. He is not urinating enough. He feels like he
has to go bad and when he gets there it is slow to start.
Before he was on this Med he never had a problem, even before he had the
Radiation Seed implant.
Any one else have this problem?????

The radiation made his prostate and other tissues swell. That chokes
off the pee-stream. The swelling also confuses the "it's time to
pee" sensors.
The Flomax, Flow - Maximum, helps him pee. Without it, he can hop
on one leg all day, grunt and push, and nothing will happen.
As long as he can go, however slow, his doc won't escalate him to the
next level. That's where they run a tube up him and strap a bag to
his leg.
-kh It's a common side effect of the radiation. |

I had the problem really bad after my second high dose
rate brachytherapy. I felt like I was going to burst.
Flomax really worked for me. You have to be careful with
it because it can lower blood pressure and cause fainting
spells. That happened to me. But after about using it for
a bit I guess I got accustomed to it because the problem
went away.
Eventually the swelling will go down and your husband is
likely to return to normal. It took me about 5 months to
get completely off Flomax, but it did happen.

I had a problem initially with light-headedness from taking Flomax. I
found the problem went away if I took it (with a snack) right before
going to bed.

Wanted to add....
I went seeds and IMRT, at about the 3rd week, my peeing slowed down
and I was doing the grunt 'n push, dribble-dribble, about every 2
hours.
The worse was about the 4th week.
Sometime in the 2nd or 3rd month, I forgot to take the Flomax for a
couple days and it got rough. The stream slowed way down.
I was on Flomax until the 6th month. I dropped it and haven't needed
it since.
At about the 1 year mark, I could stand 3 feet away and arc a pee-
stream into the target.
It takes time to heal and improvement continues for years.

kh, for the first time in 6 1/2 years I can brag about something related
to the little guy. With no restriction from a prostate, and a stricture
successfully opened, and an artificial urinary sphincter, I can easily
hit the far end of a 5 1/2 foot bathtub with no problem, not that I
would admit to the wife that I ever did that!!! Happy streams to you!! |

I know this sounds wacky. I got the info from a post in this
newsgroup, but haven't been able to find the post a second time.
Anyway, I was experiencing the same problem you say your husband has.
In the post I refer to above, the poster stated that he ate 1/3 of a
cup of dry roasted unsalted peanuts each day, and that helped his
similar problem. Oh, he gave his body weight as 165 lbs. (I'm sure
that has ome significance, but as I said I was not able to find the
post again.)
I was skeptical, but since I had some dry roasted peanuts sitting in
the kitchen, I gave them a try. (Truthfully, I was getting pretty
desparate for some relief from the discomfort while trying to
urinate.)
The short version of this story is it's been two full days with
minimal discomfort when urinating. The relief was almost immediate. I
hope it continues to work.
If your husband doesn't have an allergy to peanuts he might want to
give them a try. |

I had hubby not take his Flomax for a day, as we were going to our SIL
Birthday party yesterday, and going to grandsons baseball game.
There was only port-o-johnnys there for a bathroom.
He only had to go twice in 6 hours.
Someone suggested for him to take his Flomax before bedtime with a snack
and that is what he did last night.
I did not hear him up during the night at all.
He loves peanuts so I will get him some dry roasted nuts today.

| | | Re: Flomax side effect???? Alos, I have found that I take one in the am and one at pm it works better.
Dr. said it should not matter as the medicine stays in the system 24-28 hrs.
And all it really does is relax the smooth muscles of the body - bladder and
urniary track are smooth muscles....

I took flomax for about 15 months after seeding.
I did not notice any side effects.
one of the side effects was reduced semen emission.
I thought this kinda humorous.
as to lower blood pressure, I have low bp anyway, and am familiar with
fainting or getting dizzy on standing up quickly.
This is due to, I think, the valves in you leg veins not closing fast
enough, to prevent blood from draining from head.
I found that if I gave my legs notice I was going to stand up, I did not
have this problem.
that is, I tensed my legs a couple times and then stood up slowly.
Now that I am not taking flomax, this is not as bad.
just my 2 cents.
