Default HIFU - Now You Gotta Believe me!

See. Told you so. 1996 I was the first G9 to volunteer for HIFU (High
Intensity Focused Ultrasound). And afterwards I wrote to all the guys
here saying no side-effects, no side-effects, no side-effects. And
only a day for the treatment and then out right as rain. (Well, two
days if you're a bit of an old weakling like me.) In the intervening
years I kept reading worried blokes here asking, 'what's the best
method to get rid of it in the prostate?'; and when Da Vinci was
mentioned (presumably because of the blockbuster film) - always lots
of follow-up questions. Same for R.P., radiation. But when I edged in,
and mentioned HIFU - no side-effects, no side-effects, no side-effects
(well, almost), I was genuinely surprised I never got one follow-up
query. Perhaps that was because of the shy and self-effacing in which
I write. And maybe also because, well, one could wait ten years and be
sure.

But now it's true - 'cos it's in all the newspapers. They're quoting
from the British Journal of Cancer which is reporting the success of
the trials at UCHL - where the lead surgeon Mark Emberton 'did' me
outside the trials, which were for G7 limit. My hat off to him again.

Front-page headline in the Daily Telegraph today, "Breakthrough In
Treatment of Prostate Cancer." Headline? - Nah - that ain't news.

Kind regards and best of outcomes to all.

Perhaps. Maybe. Or maybe because it's not approved yet in the U.S.,
still "experimental" in the U.K. and patients don't trust the average
Dominican Republic urologist?

“We don’t yet know for sure if HIFU is more effective than traditional
treatments so it will be important to carry out further studies
involving a larger number of patients, followed over a longer period of
time to truly compare the long-term effectiveness of this treatment.”
says Dr. Ahmed, who ran the trial.

Well done, old chap. That voodoo stuff you practice - (learned we now
know, in the Dominican Republic, of which you display an intimate
knowledge) - actually works. You slipped by my killfire ministrations
which should have kept you at bay.

So may I apologise most humbly for diverting you from your daily
rituals of sticking pins into plastic populations, and wish you better
fortune in being left to your devotions in the future.

I am, I assure you (in case the pins work), your devoted disciple

Apparently it's difficult for HiFu salesman MikeHi ("Now You Gotta
Believe me") to accept the truth.

Here's what Mike's fellow promotor Can-AmHiFu says on its own website:

"The Sonablate® 500 is not approved for use in the U.S. ...Currently,
the device is approved for the treatment of prostate cancer in Canada
and ***the Dominican Republic***, authorized in Argentina, and available
in the Bahamas and Mexico."

http://www.can-amhifu.com/

And here's the cold water U.K. researcher Ahmed himself throws on
irresponsible statements like those by Mike, claiming that HiFu is the
ultimate PCa treatment:

“We don’t yet know for sure if HIFU is more effective than traditional
treatments so it will be important to carry out further studies
involving a larger number of patients, followed over a longer period of
time to truly compare the long-term effectiveness of this treatment.”

Or, more directly, don't feed the trolls.

That's what they want; it's what they lust after: attention from their
betters.

There is nothing to be gained by granting them their desire.

I just remembered the entire saying.

"If you rassle with pigs, you get muddy... and the pigs love it."

-kh all I know of pigs is bacon wrapped around a steak and charcoal
broiled.

I, for one, didn't know about HIFU until you brought it up. I suspect most
here did not. Usually there is no lacking of opinions -- even by those who
don't know what they're talking about.

(Safire, trembling with rage, rips open a fresh box of 'Acme' pink
plastic effigies, one hand crudely daubing 'MikeHi' on each of them
while the other rummages around the bottom of the box for the included
tub of jumbo pins.....)
