posts this morning and at Noon, I received 100 messages telling me that Time
Warner had stopped its news service. Not alt. Not the "big 8". None.
Zero. Nada.
But, thanks to my Canadian minx, I am back with Motzarella.

Welcome back, Steve.
Yes, it appears that Verizon, Time Warner and Sprint have all entered into
some agreement with the Attorney General of New York to limit, or block
completely, the Usenet from their services...particularly the
alt.hierarchies (containing the alt.binaries) in some *overkill* effort to
fight child pornography. Throwing out the baby with the bath water,
apparently.

Cheese?
Well, no one paid attention to my recommendation of Mozilla Thunderbird,
which is free and has never failed me. Suit yourself.

Motzarella is a news *server*. Thunderbird is a news *client*.
They can work together and, in fact, I am using Thunderbird
to post this message on a Motzarella hosted server.

That's truly weird. Are they going to block the world wide web
next because it has pornographic websites? How about blocking
the phone network because it's possible to transmit lewd statements
over phone lines?
I wonder if there is a hidden agenda of just eliminating a service
that costs money and doesn't typically sell much, i.e., there probably
aren't a lot of users who will throw out their ISP because of this.

Tnx. No one had bothered to explain that with such clarity.
Now, if someone would define the difference between a new server and a
news client......

And that, my dear, is EXACTLY why they eliminate news groups. My ISP
told me that not many people used them and it cost them $10 per month.
We had a few arguments wherein I told them to reimburse me the said
$10/month so I could sub to a new one, but they were bigger than me,
grin. Ted Rogers (Rogers.com) has more money than Billy Gates and is
incredibly stingy.
Good thinking, amigo.

How about a News SERVER is a company hosting the thousands of news
groups and most of them you pay for, but some are free.
A News CLIENT (Alan's word) is the program you use to read the news
groups. In your case, it is Mozilla's Thunderbird. In my case, it is
Microsoft's Outlook Express. You could also use Opera, Free Agent, and
so on. I just happen to prefer OE and have it incredibly virus-proofed,
which is really quite simple.
Hmmm......OK. News Server is CNN. News Client is your TV set.

I've dumped three ISPs because of limited/no USENET service. They're a
quick way to get a question answered, and a long-term source of
important and/or useful info or opinions. *OTOH*, I have also dumped
some important USENET forums due to their preponderance of jerks.

It's also time to pause and reflect if you don't know the difference
between software and an ISP. Cheese? Sjeesh. What a dumbo. |

To be honest, until now, I thought Mozilla, Motzarella, and Motserella were
all the same thing mispelled differently. I never needed to pay it much
heed as I was getting it free from Time Warner without a problem. |

Un peu.
So: My ISP is Cox, which does not offer Usenet service. I subscribed to
the free Mozilla Thunderbird for e-mail and newsgroup service. Seems to
me that, whatever one's ISP, one could subscribe to any "client" one wished.
BTW, I also subscribe to Mozilla's Firefox. Free. Excellent.
No viruses, trojan horses, etc.

A news server is a computer. It may be operated by a company.

No it's totally wrong. CNN provides editorial content. Neither the
server (the computer) or the company operating the server provide
editorial content. In case of Heather's message, she was providing the
content. That illustrates another difference. There is no moderator on a
usent newsgroup. CNN would have told Heather she doesn't meet their
quality standards. News client is software. TV set is hardware. Silly
comparison.

Agreed.

OK, OK, OK. So "subscribe" was maybe not the exact, precise, particular,
explicit, unambiguous, specific, term to convey exactly, precisely,
particularly, explicitly, unambiguously, specifically, the term "use."
Sheesh.

Not on your life.
The one time I had a problem, the *volunteer* "help" folks failed to
reply to or even acknowledge my initial plea for help. When I
complained, they pounced on me for, evidently, disturbing their
slumbers. Treated me like garbage. The only information I gained was
that they were not able to help me and that when that is the case, they
simply will not respond to folks with those too-difficult issues.

Agreed. So long as one does not need help, they are indeed excellent.

Cox provides Newsgroups See #14 http://www.cox.com/policy/
And you're accessing their news servers.
It says so in your headers (headers of your posts)
Your email and newsreader (software) is Thunderbird.
Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client
The email client also serves as a news(group) reader.
It's a software package you download and set your settings then use.

Thanks for the info. Cox is pretty quiet about it' unable to find
anything on the local Cox site.
Also: I've checked my headers and find nothing about newsgroups. One
more time: I know zero about such matters and do not understand the
jargon and complexities.
I can understand if someone takes a moment to explain in plain English.

Steve.....unfortunately you use a Mac and I know nada about how they
work. I can read your headers with my PC, but have no clue what
commands you would have to use with your keyboard. We use a "right
click" to access this information....."we" being J and myself, I mean.

Au contraire, there's nothing "unfortunate" about it. I am not disabled.
I, too, can read my headers. Do not be concerned with Microcrap's right
click.
All I want to know is what I'm supposed to be looking for. IOW, what,
exactly, is the newsgroup information that's supposed to be in my
headers? I'll take it from there.

OK.....here are just 3 lines from your headers and an explanation of
what NNTP is. But you can plainly see that complaints go to the
"Newsmaster at Cox".....and that the top line has most of the word
"newsfeed" (assumption, but it is pretty obvious) and phx would be
Phoenix.
