Default Maintaining A Healthy Sexual Quality Of Life After RadicalProstatectomy

Literature about effects of a radical prostatectomy on male sexuality
generally emphasizes erectile function. Since an erection is
anatomically obvious, its strength relatively easy to measure, and is
pretty much functionally necessary for penetrative sexual intercourse,
it is not surprising that genital vascular engorgement and ability to
remain erect long enough to consummate the desired act would be common
outcome measurements for degree of sexual health following prostate
removal.

Many writers emphasize that orgasms are possible without ejaculation,
or even without an erection. In The Sexual Male: Problems and
Solutions, Richard Milsten and Julian Slowinski (Norton & Co., 1999)
state, "Orgasm and ejaculation are so closely related that men tend to
use the term 'orgasm' to describe the overall experience and
sensation, although the two can be desynchronized (i.e., there can be
ejaculation without orgasm and orgasm without ejaculation)."

Because the seminal vesicles are typically removed along with the
prostate, and because the prostate is involved with the distribution
of semen, men who have had their prostates removed do not ejaculate,
but can still experience pleasurable orgasms.

Usually omitted from discussion, however, is the qualitative
difference in the nature, or feeling, of orgasms that occur following
surgery.

It's been a long time since we discussed herein the possibilities of sex
after prostate termination. I did not click on the hypertext (I never do),
but it should be noted for those recently diagnosed that the above
paragraphs appear to be true and accurate.

Many, maybe most, of us not only ejaculate, but ejaculate greater
quantity than we did 40 years ago. OK, it's urine, but who's looking,
and the extra quantity often enhances the experience.
