Default Nerve replacement

I have pca heavy on one side and was immediately told by my uro that
nerve can't be spared and will have to go...end of story.
Another one I talked to today says he has to take the nerve but can
replace it with a nerve from the lower leg...anyone familiar with that
technique?
I hadn't heard of it before (at least, not for a penis!)

Yup. They take it from your ankle. I think it's called a surral (sp?)
nerve transplant.

We have had a few people come across the NG, but the only one that I can
name was:

Hello Skeptic,

When I talked to Dr S. he had said that he works closely with a neurosurgeon
that would step in if a nerve needed to be transplanted. Ask...
Peter
PS Good luck! You can get through this!!

The sural nerve implant/transplant slightly improves one's chances of
recovering erectile function after prostate surgery removes one or both
nerve bundles. I'm sure you can Gooogle statistics on its effectiveness.
Start Googling with something like sural nerve prostate erectile.

Also try Pubmed: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

I searched there and got 17 hits on I.P.s search terms. The
17 link out to others of interest too.

Thanks, I had never heard of this and was surprised to hear Dr. S.
suggest it as an option.
I guess that is a good sign that he is progressive in his approach.

Hello,
I am a one nerve spared man, and now I know why the creator gave us 2 eyes,
2 hands, 2 feet, 2 ears, and just to name a few, 2 penis nerve sets.........
The other one, although it took some time, took over the job of both........
I am not sending any pictures, but will attest that, yes, it works just
fine..........
I could send a smile on my wifes face though.
good wishes, and yes they use nerves from the leg to replace the one
lost......
I did not get that surgery though....

I had an RP at age 64. Only one nerve could be spared. Regained erectile
function in 6 months. Viagara helps. Probably normal now for my age (69).
I think the skill of the surgeon in saving the nerve is key here.

Pubmed is the most important medical literature database in the
world. They say they index about 5,000 journals from more than
80 countries. If it's a medical journal and it ain't indexed in Pubmed,
it's probably not worth reading.

Years ago, when it was called Medline, you had to pay to use it.
Now it's free.

In my younger days I worked on some of the software used to
feed data into it.

Hi skeptic. I had my RP 5 years ago and was told before surgery that
I would lose a nerve. They were just starting the saural nerve
transplant but the doc told me there would not be enough surface left
to do it (not sure what that meant). So that left me with one nerve
and, sorry to say, not a legitimate peep from the little guy since.
Drugs help but give me debilitating headaches and the injections
temporarily deformed the temporarily big guy. The only thing I heard
about the nerve transplant is that it can leave a numbness where it is
removed, but I think that's a very small price to pay for an erection
and I would have jumped at it if I was eligible.

Best of luck with your decisions and your treatment.

Doug
