Hello all,
My name is Terry. Had an rp in 2000. Metastisized in 2002. Getting Luprin
and at one time Casadex. Due to back pain in 2005 got radiation on spine for
second lesion. After radiation started Taxotere with a PSA of 6. Now PSA of
1 for last 6 months. Going to try 2 months on and 2 months off .... or more
with periodic PSA check. Will keep you posted. Anyone else in the same
boat???

Terry, what were your Dx numbers going in? In retrospect you probably
had systemic disease at the time of your RP. You are in the front of
the boat; I'm a few rows back.

It sounds like the Taxotere is doing a good job for you. That's
excellent. I hope it continues.

You might wish to investigate clinical trials of new therapies.
You are doing well with chemotherapy and probably don't want to
do anything different right now, but if and when it fails you may
be ready to try something else, and more ready if you've
investigated the options.

See http://cancer.gov and http://clinicaltrials.gov for ways to
find clinical trials.

One trial that I thought was intriguing was phenoxodiol which
both had a positive effect on tumors and had a positive effect in
resensitizing people to chemotherapy after their cancers had
adapted to it. Perhaps a person who has had a good response to
chemotherapy in the past, as you have, would benefit from such a
treatment if and when the chemo stops working.

Best of luck to you. Please keep us informed of your progress.

Alan

The news from the phenoxodiol (PXD) front is not encouraging, I'm sorry
to report.

Although the med is approved for "fast track" status in tx of PCa, the
manufacturer has elected to concentrate its work on approval of PXD for
tx of ovarian cancer instead.

I speculate that, if it's approved for ovarian cancer, it might be
usable in PCa tx "off-label."

See, http://www.psa-rising.com/
the 10/12 link in the news column, about ⅓ of the way down the page.

There is speculation that the decision was driven by limitation of funds.

Steve J

I had a psa of 30 and gleason of 8. Supposedly my nodes were checked before
they pulled the prostate. I can only guess the pathologist screwed up.

Your cancer could easily recur without there being any evidence of
spread in the lymph nodes examined by the pathologist during surgery. A
PSA of 30 and a Gleason 8 diagnosis poses a high risk of recurrence.
The real question is whether or not the risk was high enough to justify
surgery. You don't say what your DRE results were, but even in the best
of cirucmstances (T1c) , the likelihood of recurrence within 5 years
would have been about 50 percent according to the Sloan Kettering
nomogram. Whether surgery was justified or not in your case was a
delicate decision requring the judgement of an expert. There might also
be other considrations which your doctor took into account such as your age.

Good luck, and try to keep your spirits high.

I'd say your doctor screwed up. Unless he was interested in taking out a
mass, with a PSA 30 and Gleason 8, you never really had a chance of a cure
with the RRP. What was your biopsy Stage? T3? T4?

Hi Terry and good luck with your battle. I had RP in 2003. The frozen
LN sample pre-surgery was negative, but the post-surgery LN samples
were positive. I made it 18 months on Zoladex with Casodex sprinkled
in, then had 3 consecutive rises so was declared HRPC (hormone
refractory). Taxotere got me down to 0.3 and now I'm waiting for next
PSA. There is some evidence that taking the mass, even if metastasized,
will extend life, but that represents a shift in recommended treatment
by the medical community - not sure if there is a conclusive position.
And, even if there is, remember there are always variations on a theme.
Around 2 years ago, they would not do a RP if metastasized. In your
seat in the boat, the generally accepted goal is to keep your PSA as
low as you can for as long as you can with whatever it takes. Again,
good luck!

Rich
