Last year Stanford won the coveted award NCI-designated cancer center.
Anyway I will highlight some of the interesting news from the news letter I
got and it does remind me to donate to the research programs if
possible......but that is not what this letter is about.
Prostate Cancer Program has been designated "high priority"
they are joinging forces with:
Genetics,Pathology,Endocrinology,Biochem.,and on it goes.
Stanford is deep in these cross-disciplinary collaborations......
One of the main issues is Understanding the genetic changes in prostate
cancer for tailored therapy......
Cancer is a product of genetic changes that transform cells so that they cna
grow and spread to other locations of the body.
Stanford (as well as other schools etc.)has exploited a number of new
technologies,to characterize these changes.......
This work has allowed us to classify cancers in a new way, based on genetic
changes, rather than their appearance under a microscope or clinical
behavior.
From this work they have identified several diagnostic tools that predict
the degree of agressiveness of prostate cancer.
Now they are moving on in developing these predictive tools for use in
clinic.
We have recently begun a study focused on identifying aggressive and
non-aggressive prostate cancer with the goal of selecting patients whose
prostate cancer can be safely watched.
Other studies go on to show why androgen therapy fails and the cancer
"escapes" Dr. Sun's lab, is now working on developing a new treatment
approach that target the androgen receptor for destruction as a new way to
treat "hormone resistant" prostate cancer.
I have the entire article, and can scan it,or one may be able to read more
by connecting with Stanford, and Dr. Brooks and the Urology Dept.
Lots more in this article.....very interesting and helpful for those who are
battling the "escaped cancer" and hormone therapy........Just wanted to
share some interesting news.......
I sent in a donation since I do this every year, and figure the Dr. has
provided me with life since 1999 from his Medical skills.
Good Wishes to all, and wishing "Major Breakthroughs" for the upcoming new
years........
