| | | Proper way to do Kegels I don't know that I have the right information on how to do Kegels.
One site just said to start and stop your urine stream. Another said
to start and stop the urine stream by tightening the buttocks.
Which is it?
Any website with details that I should look at?

If just starting and stopping the stream is it, I'm doing that one ok.
One site I saw says to hold the muscle for a few seconds. Without
urine to hold back, mine releases within a half second. |

Yep, that's the one.

She actually showed me 2 kinds of Kegels.
One was to simply hold the muscle for as long as possible.
The other was to pulse the muscle 5 times, once a second. I was better at that
one, the other one sapping my strength after a few seconds.
You should be able to tighten it and hold it for some few seconds, and work to
strengthen the muscle so you can hold it longer and longer. I forget how long
the ultimate target was, but I figure with a week to go before surgery, most of
my strengthening will occur after the operation anyway. Hopefully, I'll get
to where I can keep dry (fingers crossed.)

I was instructed by a nurse a week ago last Friday - she hooked up some
electronics that made sure I was using the right muscles - I was.
It is the one that stops the urine stream. That's how I figured mine out. When
you use that muscle, you get a "pucker" of the nether regions that results in a
"tightening of the buttocks."
But, to do the exercise properly, you are thinking about flexing that muscle,
not "I'm going to tighten my buttocks." When I do mine, there is a small,
residual tightening around my anus, that is simply a side effect.
If you're in doubt, you can likely ask your medics to give you instruction such
as I had.

| | | Re: Proper way to do Kegels The instructions I was given said initially to do 20-30 repetitions of
tensing for five seconds and relaxing for five seconds, repeating the 20-30
reps four times a day. Then try to increase the time cycle to ten seconds
tense/10 seconds relaxed. They also said no Kegels post-op until the
catheter was removed. Good luck.
