I have just found that RR will no longer offer Usenet service.
I really don't want to register with Yahoo, because, as you can see,
my email address appears. Road runner has suggested some commercial
services that would charge me, but are there any free ones out there?
If so, how do I get there and register? Thanks for your help.

Don't all the major ISPs provide USENET at no extra cost?

Time Warner, Verizon, and Sprint no longer do. I found Motzarella through
reading Steve's information via Heather. |

No.....they are getting rid of them because they say they are losing
money on them. Most of the commercial ones are about $10/month. They
also say that the 21st Century mode is via blogging and forums, etc.
BS.

I can't comprehend using blogs for information, and the forums I'm on
are not set up for killfiling the jerks.
(To those of you who think *I"M* a jerk: you must not spend much time on
USENET; it's all relative, and anyplace *I* want to avoid would be sheer
hell for you.)

With an ever reducing number of portals into usenet, and -
google-groups excepted - a slightly arcane system of posting, the
demise of usenet must be almost upon us.
Does anyone know which is the most populated PCa forum out there? |

I wonder how long it will be before *aioe.org* and Motzarella and the other
free news services will also begin to charge after the influx of subscribers
moving from the ISP's who used to carry Usenet.

I don't know. But I used to use an excellent free German one that now
charges annually. "Individual.net??".....I think. But my one problem
with it is that they did not allow you to use a munged address.
OK, just checked them out and they do allow you to use the "invalid"
word at the end of your from address. And it is 10 Euros a year, but at
the time they started charging, they didn't have Paypal and that was a
HUGE drawback.
Just as a bit of trivia, one of the best free manual antivirus proggies
was one called "F-Prot" from Iceland (many years ago). Frisk didn't
charge because it would cost him 3 times as much as the registration fee
in order to cash a North American cheque.

I also used the German Server when it was free. When they started to
charge I switched to the Comcast news server that is free. In the long
run Comcast had lots of problems and I have been back with the German
Server for a long time now. It is news.individual.net and costs about
$14 per year, it is very, very reliable.

My last few ISPs were so unreliable I ended up picking up an account with
Newsguy. It was a lot easier just getting newsgroups through a dependable
third-party.
They have a good assortment of options depending if you download much or not.
They're also having a special for Roadrunner customers looking for a Usenet
replacement. http://newsguy.com/freemonth.htm

I used to participate in a Yahoo forum for prostate cancer. It was
well used and there was a sort of minimal moderation that kept
virtually all of the spam out. Unfortunately, for reasons I was
never able to discover, the "daily digest" mechanism I liked to
use on that group stopped working for me (it still worked for
some people) and I drifted away.
Oddly, the treatment option popularity on that group was
quite different from the popularity here.
I would say that on a.s.c.p, most of us have chosen surgery
with a significant number choosing one or another form of
x-radiation. On the Yahoo group there was intense interest in
proton radiation - a different animal from x-rays. I don't recall
anyone on our group choosing that - though admittedly its
availability is very limited.

Steve.....I can't seem to get thru to Steve Jordan (Esteban), but
Mozilla is the maker of a browser and/or email program. As in Firefox,
Thunderbird, and so on.
Motzarella is a free news server......as is aioe.org and a few others.
Two totally different things.
Must write aioe.org and see why they ban your posts. Probably another
Steve Kramer who is banned. Kramer would not be an uncommon name in
Germany.

found out
about the news group news.motzarella.org. Go to their web site,
motzarella.org, it's free. You have to
register and they will send an email giving you a password and how to sign
on. I use
Outlook Express, it took about 15 minutes total to sign on and get their
email and
then start the newgroup in Outlook Express.

Yes, interesting how forums have a tendency to cloud-cluster round a
bias or favouritism, like chatting groups at a party. By and large
a.s.c.p. seems to manage to keep its church fairly broad. |
